Men's Golf In 10th After Round One At Regionals
May 15, 2017 | Men's Golf
SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- The 30th-ranked University of Washington men's golf team sits in 10th place at the 2017 NCAA Sammamish Regional after carding a collective 11-over-par 295 on Monday (May 15) during the opening round at Aldarra Golf Club in Sammamish, Wash.
"Everyone was just a little bit off today," said head coach Alan Murray. "We started a bit slower than we wanted but I don't feel we're far away at all. Everyone just has one or two things they can do a little bit better tomorrow. We need to remember that we don't want to get too high when things are going great and we don't want to get too low when things are going against us. We'll rest up and get ready to get after it again tomorrow."
Just 12 strokes separate the top seven schools, with No. 24 Florida State grabbing the first-round lead after firing a combined 6-under 278, followed by No. 1 USC (-4) and No. 36 Alabama (-1). Kent State (+3) and Texas A&M (+3) are tied for fourth while San Diego State (+6) and Penn State (+6) are tied for sixth on the 6,885-yard par-71 course.
Following the completion of Wednesday's final round, the top five schools earn a spot in the NCAA championship series, scheduled for May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
USC's Sean Crocker is leading the field after firing a 7-under 64 in the opening round. Florida State's Josh Lee (-4) is in second while Justin Suh of USC (-3), Steven Setterstrom of Alabama and Nick Carlson of Michigan are tied for third.
Individually, Washington was paced by senior Corey Pereira and sophomore Carl Yuan, who both ended the day in a tie for 27th out of 75 golfers after posting 2-over 73.
After starting the day with a double-bogey, Pereira settled down with eight consecutive pars, ending the round with 11 total and three birdies. Three bogeys on the back nine, however, thwarted his advance. Yuan also carded three birdies on the day.
Junior Frank Garber occupies the 38th position after carding a 3-over 74. Garber also tallied three birdies in the opening round.
Starting from the 10th tee, freshman Henry Lee drained a team-high four birdies. However, four bogeys after the turn prevented a loftier perch as the Pac-12 All-Freshman honorable mention honoree sits in a tie for 45th after carding 4-over 75.
Rounding out the Husky contingent was freshman Daniel List, who also landed in a tie for 45th after shooting an opening-round 75. Despite logging just one birdie in the opening round, List managed to ease the sting of five bogeys with a team-high 12 pars, including his final five holes.
The NCAA Sammamish Regional continues on Tuesday (May 16) when Washington tees off for the second round, beginning at 8:55 a.m. PT.
