Four Huskies Given Pac-12 Honors
May 14, 2017 | Softball
SAN FRANCISCO –Four Huskies earned 2017 All-Pac-12 honors as voted on by the conference coaches, the league announced on Monday. Ali Aguilar, Taran Alvelo, Casey Stangel and Sis Bates were each given conference honors after their performances on the field during the 2017 season.
"I'm very excited for our four athletes that made the team," said Washington head coach Heather Tarr. "It's about leaving no doubt when you have an opportunity to face your conference opponents and it's ultimately what the other coaches think of your athletes and team. It's an honor to have Ali, Taran and Casey on the first team."
Aguilar garners All-Pac-12 First Team and All-Defensive Team honors after boasting a .349 average, 50 runs on 52 hits and ten home runs. The native of Orangevale, Calif., has started and played in 48 games this season. She's collected 76 putouts and 98 assists as the team's starting shortstop.
Alvelo, who hails from Carroll, Ohio, also earned All-Pac-12 First team honors after pacing the Husky pitching staff with a 28-6 record, 170 strikeouts and 22 complete games. Alvelo leads the conference in batter struck out looking and her 74 strikeouts in conference play was third-best while her 12 wins tied for first. Her notable wins this season include Auburn, Oklahoma, Oregon, Minnesota and Utah.
Stangel, a native of Couer D'Alene, Idaho, has led the team at the plate with a .355 batting average, .638 slugging percentage and .476 on base percentage. She also leads the team in home runs with 11.
"All-Conference teams are interesting," said Heather Tarr. "This year, our athletes didn't have the last week and a half to assemble the credibility to be named on the All-Conference teams; the coaches voted a week earlier than normal. I think some of our athletes didn't make the team who should have made the team, specifically Morganne Flores and Taylor Van Zee."
Also getting conference recognition is Bates, who is one of 14 newcomers to make the 2017 Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.
"Sis making the All-Freshmen team is big," said Tarr. "It's great for her, for our program and our team's future."
In her first year wearing the Purple and Gold, Bates has made an immediate impact both offensively and defensively. At the plate, Bates leads the team and conference in triples with five. She is right behind Stangel in batting average, boasting a season average of .353. The freshman has started all 54 games this season, primarily at second base but has also seen time at third base and shortstop.
Aguilar, Alvelo, Stangel, Bates and the rest of the Huskies begin post-season play this Friday as they host an NCAA Regional. Washington will play on Friday, May 19 at 8:30 p.m. against Montana. The game will be aired on ESPN2.
