Huskies Fall To Clemson At NCAA Championships
May 12, 2017 | Women's Tennis
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Washington women's tennis team fell to Clemson 2-4 today in the First Round of the NCAA Championships, bringing their 2017 season to a close.
"It is always hard for the season to come to an end but I couldn't be more proud of the girls for the way they competed today and all year long," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "They left it all out there and unfortunately one team had to lose, but that match is what college tennis is all about and we will be better because of it."
The Tigers claimed the doubles point by winning matches on both courts two and three in doubles. Miki Kobayashi and Alexis Prokopuik led on court one 5-2 in their match, but were unable to finish once the doubles was clinched.
To begin singles, the Huskies claimed the first sets on four courts, before sophomore Stacey Fung tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 121 Marie Leduc on court one. UW claimed the lead 2-1 shortly afterwards when Nour Abbes won her match on court three 6-4, 6-4 over Fernanda Navarro.
On court four, Clemson was able to tie the match back at 2-2 with a win and eventually take the lead on court five when Prokopuik fell in a tough three-set match. The Tigers would eventually clinch the victory on court two, bringing the final score to 4-2.
Washington's accomplished season comes to a close after reaching the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2011, and ending with the most wins during the regular season since 2009. The future for the program looks bright, as each 20-game winner in singles this year is set to return.
"Where we are today compared to where we started this journey back in September is night and day," said Stephenson. "We have accomplished so much this year and have taken so many strides forward. I feel great about where this program is and the people that are part of it and we all know that the best is yet to come."
