Season Ramps Up For Dawgs With Top-Ranked Foes
April 06, 2017 | Beach Volleyball
SEATTLE - Washington charges headlong into the meat of its schedule this week, traveling to Southern California to play five matches in three days, four of those matches coming against teams ranked in the top-eight nationally. The Dawgs kick things off on Friday against the defending NCAA Champions of USC, then play double-headers on Saturday and Sunday in Santa Monica.
The Huskies won their season-opener last weekend against Portland, but now will be facing teams riding long winning streaks, some with more than 20 matches under their belts already this season. No. 1-ranked USC is 20-0 this season, with a 50-match win streak coming in, and its No. 1 pair of Kelly Claes and Sarah Hughes has won 99 in a row as a duo, so the Huskies will certainly have an opportunity to see how they stack up against the best in the sport.
The match at USC's Merle Norman Stadium will be live streamed online starting at 4 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday the Huskies will be at Ocean Park in Santa Monica. Saturday at 10 a.m. the Dawgs start off facing fifth-ranked Long Beach State (17-3) and then come right back at 12 noon to take on the third-ranked UCLA Bruins who are on a 19-match win streak to go to 21-2 on the year. The Huskies played both LBUS and UCLA last season, falling 4-1 in both matches.
Sunday starts with a fourth-straightย top-eight dual at 11 a.m. against No. 8 Arizona (11-6). The weekend wraps up against Concordia of Irvine at 1 p.m. The Eagles are 10-3 on the year against mostly Div. II competition but have also beaten Cal State Northridge, and faced Long Beach State and Cal Poly.
