SEATTLE – After splitting matches with the Los Angeles schools, the No. 31 Washington women's tennis team will continue their Pac-12 schedule this weekend, hosting Arizona Friday April 7th at 1:30 p.m., and Arizona State on Sunday the 9th at 11 a.m.
Dropping a tough match with UCLA last Friday, the Huskies bounced back against USC on Sunday. Surrendering the doubles point to begin the match and losing the first two singles matches, the Huskies came back by winning four straight singles points against the Trojans, defeating them for the first time since 2009. For her efforts last weekend, junior Miki Kobayashi was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week after picking up a singles win in each match, with her win against USC starting the four point rally.
Sophomore Kenadi Hance came up clutch for the Dawgs yet again, grabbing the clinching point against USC. She previously capped of the first 0-3 comeback of Washington's season against Alabama, and topped that performance against the Trojans, coming back to win her second set 7-5 to force a third which she won 6-1 over No. 96 Zoe Katz.
In the latest ITA Singles Rankings, Stacey Fung earned a career-high rank of 50th in the country. Last weekend Fung drew the match against USC at 3-3 with a big 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 20 Gabby Smith, her highest ranked opponent defeated at Washington.
On Friday the Huskies will host Arizona, who most recently dropped two matches to Denver and Oregon last weekend. Head coach Vicky Maes is in her 16th season at the helm, and guided the Wildcats to a 10-8 season thus far. Senior Lauren Marker leads the team, owning a 17-2 singles record, going 16-1 in dual match play all on court one and owning the 27th spot in the latest ITA Singles Rankings. While the Huskies were able to defeat the Wildcats 4-3 last season, Arizona still leads the all-time series between the two programs at 22-11.
No. 36 Arizona State will travel to Seattle for a Sunday matchup with the Huskies, after taking on Washington State in Pullman, Wash. on Friday beforehand. Coached by Sheila McInerney in her 33rd season, the Sun Devils currently own five total ITA rankings, led by No. 61 Kassidy Jump in singles. The senior owns a 17-10 record, going 6-5 in dual match play, and owns a 22-5 record in doubles paired with Sammi Hampton. Last weekend, ASU hosted Oregon, defeating them 4-1 to pick up their third Pac-12 win on the season.
