April 04, 2017 | Track & Field
SAN FRANCISCO – Amy-Eloise Neale and Casey Burns garnered the first Pac-12 Athlete of the Week honors of their careers today fresh off a pair of Pac-12 leading marks this past weekend. Neale won Women's Track Athelte of the Week after claiming the Stanford Invite title in her first ever 5k, while Burns won his flight of the triple jump at the Texas Relays.
Neale (Snohomish, Wash.) won the 5,000-meters at the Stanford Invitational in her first ever race at that distance on the track. The reigning Pac-12 Cross Country individual champion outkicked the NCAA cross country and indoor 5,000-meter champ Karissa Schweizer down the final stretch for the victory, her time of 15:39.30 just .45 seconds ahead of the Mizzou runner. It was her first race since finishing ninth in the NCAA mile final last month. The junior now ranks No. 2 in the NCAA this season in the 5k and No. 3 in UW history along with leading the conference.
Burns (Burien, Wash.) leaped to a new career-best in the triple jump at the Texas Relays on his first attempt, going 51-10.5 (15.81 meters) to win his section. That mark is the best in the Pac-12 so far this season, No. 2 in Washington program history and 14th in the nation.
The Pac-12 runner-up in the triple jump in 2015, Burns is the first Husky triple jumper to win Pac-12 Athlete of the Week honors. Neale is the first Women's Track Athlete of the Week for UW since Katie Flood in 2014.
Washington will be off this week before heading to the historic Mt. SAC Relays the following weekend.
