HEADED SOUTH
The No. 9/10 Washington softball team is taking a break from conference play this weekend to face two teams in Alabama. The Huskies will open the week on Thursday, April 19 at 4 p.m. PT at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. The next day the team will head to Tuscaloosa to face the No. 12/12 Alabama Crimson Tide at 4 p.m. PT. The team will close out their road trip at Alabama on Saturday, April 22 at 2:30 p.m. PT. Both games at Alabama will be aired live on the SEC Network+.
LAST TIME OUT
The University of Washington Huskies are coming off a 2-1 series at Oregon. The Huskies handed the Ducks their first two home losses of the season. Taran Alvelo started all three games in the circle, earning two wins. Ali Aguilar hit a game winning home run in the first game of the series. Morganne Flores helped lead the team to victory in the series finale after collecting three doubles, including pushing through the two game winning runs in the ninth inning. Aguilar led the team with a .700 batting average, followed by fellow senior Casey Stangel with a .300. Flores led the team in RBIs with 7.Seven Huskies had multi-hit weekend in Eugene.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
After her standout performance at Oregon, Taran Alvelo earned Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week Honors. Alvelo earned two wins at Oregon last weekend in Eugene, handing the Ducks their first home losses of the season. The pitcher started all three games over the weekend, boasting 22 strikeouts over 19 innings pitched. She tossed two complete games, including a nine inning win Sunday afternoon. The sophomore was relentless in the circle, allowing just eight runs -- on 12 hits for a 1.84 series ERA.
CLOSER LOOK: UAB
UAB heads into the matchup with No. 9/10 Washington carrying a 16-27 overall record and is 7-8 in conference play. Analyse Petree leads the Blazers offensively with a .291 batting average and a .436 slugging percentage. The sophomore is second on the squad with 16 RBI and 48 total bases through 43 games. Destini England boasts a .261 batting average and has a team-high 20 runs scored and 36 hits, six of those being triples, which is the most in Conference USA. The freshman outfielder is second on the squad with eight stolen bases and 48 total bases.
INSIDE THE SERIES
This will be only the third time in program history that UAB and Washington have played each other. The all-time series is tied 1-1 with the Huskies winning the last meeting, 8-4, in 2013.
CLOSER LOOK: ALABAMA
Last weekend, Alabama fell twice on the road at Tennessee before the third game of the series was called due to rain. Alabama is now 36-9 overall and 10-7 in SEC play. The Tide comes in at No. 14 in this week's NCAA Rating Percentage Index and is ranked No. 12 in both the USA Today/NFCA poll and the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. The Crimson Tide is second in the SEC in strikeouts (393), opposing batting average (.167) and hits allowed (174).
