Washington Falls To UCLA In Series Opener
March 31, 2017 | Softball
SEATTLE – The Husky softball team dropped its series opener against UCLA, 6-2, Friday night at Husky Softball Stadium. A home run from Ali Aguilar in the third inning just wasn't enough for the Huskies to capture the win against their third Pac-12 opponent of the season.
The Huskies collected five hits on the night, two from Taylor Van Zee and one each from Aguilar, Casey Stangel and Kirstyn Thomas.
UCLA scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead.
The Huskies answered back in the bottom of the second with a one run. Thomas got things started with a single to shortstop. Sis Bates was walked to advance Thomas to second. Trysten Melhart then reached first on an error by the Bruins' third baseman, allowing Thomas to cross home plate.
Aguilar pounded a solo home run to center field in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2.
The Bruins took back the lead in the fourth inning after two hit batters put two runners on base. The pair advanced to scoring positions after a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single brought in the runner from third and UCLA was in the lead once again, 3-2.
In bottom of the frame, Bates led off with a bunt single. Melhart was issued a walk immediately after and Amirah Milloy laid a sacrifice bunt to advance the base runners to second and third. Aguilar was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs, but Stangel lined out to left field and the Huskies were unable to take advantage of the scoring opportunity.
The Bruins tacked on a run in the sixth inning when a runner reached third off a Husky throwing error, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
UCLA's lead was extended even further when pitcher Rachel Garcia hit a two-run home, giving the Bruins a 6-2 lead in the top of the seventh.
Taran Alvelo started in the circle for the Huskies, striking out four batters in seven innings. She issued only one walk in the game.
The teams will return to Husky Softball Stadium on Saturday, April 1 for the 25th season anniversary. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m. PT. An anniversary celebration will take place prior to the first pitch. The game will be aired live on the Pac-12 Network.
