March 25, 2017 | Track & Field
SEATTLE - At West Seattle Stadium, a handful of Huskies competed today at the Doris Heritage Distance Festival, hosted by Seattle Pacific University. Nine Huskies picked up victories against local college competition and a few Husky distance standouts opened up their seasons in solid fashion.
A number of Dawgs ran in the 1,500-meters, with Emily Hamlin getting a win in the women's race and Andrew Gardner taking the men's run. Hamlin ran 4:31.36 to finish just ahead of Katie Knight in her first race since NCAA Cross Country in the fall. Knight ran 4:31.88 and Izzi Batt-Doyle, also making her track season debut, was third in 4:32.07. Josephine Bosserman went 4:33.60 and Kaylee Flanagan ran 4:35.77 as well. Gardner's winning time was 3:53.38 with Connor Morello second in 3:55.00.
Hannah Derby won the women's 400-meters by nearly three seconds, running 55.83, while freshman Walker Flynn ran 49.42 to win the men's race, unattached.
In the throws, freshman Emmy Engle led the way in the women's javelin with a toss of 132-10 and Katherine Taylor threw 131-2. Multi-eventer Ericka Budinich had a big javelin PR of 111-11. Freshman Jacob Wachtendonk, throwing unattached in the men's javelin, was second at 184-0. Freshman Angel Nkwonta won the women's shot put at 43-1 1/2, and Jose Padilla won the men's shot put going 55-1 on his sixth attempt.
Carey Campbell and Onyie Chibuogwu threw the hammer for a second straight week and both got the wins. Campbell went 179-0 for the victory and Chibuogwu threw 181-7.
Next week will be a big one for the Dawgs, as the squad splits up with one group heading to the Stanford Invitational and another going to the Texas Relays.
