SEATTLE - The biggest weekend of the Dempsey season is at hand, as three straight days of action will fill Washington's indoor facility. Featuring multiple Olympians, members of 11 of the 12 Pac-12 conference teams, and many more schools from around the country, the Husky Classic promises to deliver dozens of NCAA Indoor qualifiers and record-setting times.
Friday evening the Husky Classic begins at 4 p.m. with the 200-meters, distance medley relays, 5,000-meters, men's weight throw, and early flights of pole vault. Saturday's full day starts at 10 a.m. and the top sections of the distance events along with the finals of the sprints will begin at 3 p.m.
After the dust settles on Saturday night, the annual UW Indoor Open will take place on Sunday, starting at 9 a.m.
Typically one of the deepest, and fastest, meets on the collegiate track calendar, the Husky Classic produced 50 marks that ranked in the top-25 nationally by the end of the 2016 indoor season, including the fastest women's 3,000-meters in 2016 (Boise State's Allie Ostrander; 8:54.27) and the fastest men's 5,000-meters (Oregon's Edward Cheserek; 13:35.86). Ten of the 25 fastest women's 5,000-meter times were set at the Husky Classic last year, as were nine of the top-25 men's 5,000-meters, and seven of the top-25 women's 3,000-meters. A total of 64 sub-four-minute miles have been run at the Husky Classic since 2006.
Along with athletes from nearly ever Pac-12 institution, the Husky Classic will also feature athletes hailing from Arkansas, Boise State, Colorado State, UCONN, Harvard, Houston, New Mexico, North Carolina, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Penn State, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, UTEP, and West Virginia.
The Huskies will look to continue building on their NCAA Indoor squad this weekend as well. As it stands right now, senior Kennadi Bouyerย and junior Colby Gilbert are holding top-16 spots nationally, which is what is needed at the end of the regular season to advance to nationals. Bouyer is tied for 10th in the 60-meter dash, and Gilbert is the NCAA leader in the 3,000-meters and also 10th in the mile. Bouyer is scheduled to run the 60-meters again this weekend while also being entered in the long jump. Gilbert will race his third different distance this year as he is set for the top section of the 5,000-meters on Friday night.
In the sprints, five Husky women will run in the 200-meters on Friday: Imaniย Apostol, Alexis Ford, Darhian Mills, Sarah Stavig, and Cydnicia Wade. On Saturday, Laura Anuakpado, Carolyn Birkenfeld, and Whitney Diggs, all part of the school record-setting 4x400m relay from two weeks ago, will all run open 400-meters. Mills will also run the 60m hurdles, along with Carly Lester and Morganne Hill. In the men's sprints, Lucas Strong and Khalil Winfrey will run the 60, and Walker Flynn and Jacopo Spano will run the 200. Jason Palmer, Michael Thomas, Ryan Croson, and Andrew Brown will all go in the 400-meters, with Brown and Croson in the top two heats. Junior Eric Simpson will shoot for another PR in the 60m hurdles.
One of the marquee events will be the top heat of the men's mile, where senior Blake Nelson, an NCAA 1,500mย semifinalist last year,ย will look to break the four-minute barrier in a race that features U.S. Olympians Evan Jager and Lopez Lomong. The men's 5k will also be a big one to watch for the Dawgs, as Gilbert is joined by Fred Huxham and Andrew Gardner in a field headlined by Oregon's Edward Cheserek. In the women's distance events, sophomore Hannah Derby will look to keep her momentum going in the women's 800-meters. All-American Amy-Eloise Neale is set for the top section of a loaded women's mile field. On Friday, freshman Kaitlyn Neal will run a 5k for the first time, earning a spot in the top section, and Kaylee Flanagan will race a 3k on Saturday afternoon.
In the women's jumps, Mayson Douglass will be in the top women's high jump section coming off her PR of 5-7 from two weeks back. Elizabeth Quick, looking for a return trip to NCAA Indoors, will chase some big bars in the women's pole vault along with Kaitlin Zinsli, who made 13-feet for the first time last meet. Bouyer and Kate Adler are in the top women's long jump flight, while Alanna Cokerย competes in the top triple jump section. Freshman Bryce Faussetย is in the top men's high jump flight with Cole Jensen in flight one. Sophomore Chase Smith, coming off a 17-3 PR at the UW Invite, leads the Dawgs in the men's pole vault along with freshmen Joey Weiler and Zach Shugart who both jumped PRs two weeks back. Josh Gordon will focus on the long jump this week, with Casey Burns looking to improve on his 49-9 season opener in the triple jump.
In the throws, juniors Onyie Chibuogwu and Carey Campbell will take up the weight again this weekend, while freshman Jose Padilla looks to progress on his solid 53-2 shot put mark from the UW Invite.
