Huskies Drop Game Two To Missouri At Mary Nutter, 9-5

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- The No. 8 Washington Huskies (8-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead before No. 20ย Missouri (7-3) even stepped up to the plate, but a late rally by the Tigers in the sixth inning resulted in a 9-5 loss for the Huskies in game two of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Huskies' momentum from their 11-4 win over Ohio State before their faceoff with Missouri carried into game two against the Tigers.ย The first five batters reached baseย right out the gate, followed by a three-run homer from Morganne Flores.
Ali Aguilar got the game started with a single. Casey Stangel reached first on an error that advanced Aguilar to second. Taylor Van Zee stepped up to the plate and hit a single that plated Aguilar. Leading 1-0 with one out, Trysten Melhart singled and brought Stangel home from third. Flores sealed the deal with a three-run home run to extend the Huskies' lead to 5-0.
Missouri answered back with two back-to-back home runs from Kirsten Mack with a two-run home run and Braxton Burnside to make the score 5-3.
Taran Alvelo started on the mound for Washington but was relieved by Madi Schreyer in the bottom of the first.
The Tigers were next to make a move after Burnside scored her second homerun of the game. The freshman tied the game at 5-5 with her two-run homer.
The Tigers took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, tallying another run off an RBI single from Cayla Kessinger. They then extended their lead after Natalie Fleming blasted the ball to left field for a three-run homerun.
The Huskies wereย able to prevent any further damage from being done, but were unable to regain the lead, finishing with their first loss in seven games, 9-5.
