
Huskies Sit In 11th After First Day Of Burns Intercollegiate

LIHUE, Hawaii -- After the opening day of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, the University of Washington men's golf team sits in 11th place after shooting a team score of 6-over 294 at the Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Hawaii.
Washington shot 6-over par on the day and are 26 strokes back of leader No. 4 Virginia, who leads the field at 20-under 268, eight strokes ahead of No. 18 Texas A&M (276). No. 23 UNLV (282), No. 46 Brigham Young (284) and Santa Clara (287) round out the top 5.
The Huskies were paced by freshman Sam Warkentin who carded an even-par performance and finished the day in a tie for 23rd. The Bainbridge Island, Wash. native carded two birdies and his 14 pars tied for most among all players. Warkentin sits 10 strokes back of leader Jimmy Stanger of Virginia, who shot a course record of 10-under par (62) through one round of play.
Senior Kevin Kwon carded a 1-over 73 and led the Huskies with four birdies on the day.
The tournament continues tomorrow (Feb. 16) with a 10:30 a.m. PT shotgun start.
