
Huskies Fall To BYU In Game Two Of Puerto Vallarta Challenge

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mex. – The No. 13 Huskies fell to Brigham Young University, 4-2, Friday night in day two of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. A late hitting frenzy led the Cougars (2-1) to three late runs and a win over the Huskies (1-1) after Washington took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
The Cougars (2-1) had four of their eight hits which led to three runs in their half of the sixth to cap the upset over the Huskies.
Maddie Schreyer (0-1) allowed a lone run in the first inning, but kept BYU off the scoreboard until the sixth inning. BYU`s Caitlyn Larsen Allredge hit a two-run double to give the Cougars the lead and Brielle Breland drove in Allredge with a single off UW reliever Samantha Manti to cap the scoring for BYU.
The Cougars jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ashley Thompson scored from third on an error after two outs.
The Huskies got the equalizer in the fourth when Julia DePonte hit a double up the middle bringing pinch runner Kaija Gibson home from second.
The game remained tied until Casey Stangel (1-for-2) stepped up to the plate in the sixth inning and gave the Huskies the lead with a solo home run, the first home run for the 2017 season. But the Huskies' 2-1 lead was short-lived as BYU responded with a three-spot in the bottom half of the inning.
The Huskies tried to rally In the seventh inning, but were unable to comeback against winning pitcher McKenna Bull (2-0). Trysten Melhart hit a one-out single and stole second but was stranded on base to end the game.
Despite taking the loss, Schreyer was outstanding in the circle for the Huskies. She allowed seven hits, four runs, three earned and stuck out six in 5 2/3 innings.
Offensively, the Huskies had seven hits on the night, with Melhart (2-for-3), DePonte (2-for-3) and Morganne Flores (2-for-3) each collecting two hits.
The Huskies finish their campaign in Puerto Vallarta tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 11 with a double-header against Nebraska at 12:30 p.m. and No. 1 Oklahoma at 3:30 p.m. PT.
