SEATTLE --- Washington added to its impressive post-season haul as four Huskies were named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I All-Far West Region team which was announced on Monday.
Junior defender Quentin Pearson and sophomore forward Handwalla Bwana earned first-team recognition while senior defender Justin Fiddes and freshman midfielder Blake Bodily were named to the second-team. The quartet of Huskies on the first two teams matched the most of any Pac-12 school with Stanford also adding a third-team selection.
"This honor is well deserved for all four of our guys," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "They all elevated their games and were vital to our success. Most importantly, they are all hard workers that represent the Husky ethic well."
Bwana, a sophomore from Seattle, led Washington and was second in the Pac-12 in points (22), tied for second in goals (8) and tied for third in assists (6). The former Pac-12 Freshman of the Year earned First-Team All-Pac-12 Honors this season. Bwana scored twice in UW's regular-season finale at Oregon State to take back the team lead. Earlier in the season, Bwana recorded Washington's first hat trick since the 2013 season when he tallied three goals against Santa Clara.
Pearson, a junior from Longmont, Colo., helped anchor the Huskies' defense which held opponents to just 15 goals in the 19 matches he was on the pitch. Pearson, a All-Pac-12 second-team selection, scored a pair of goals on the season including a key second-half insurance goal in the victory over cross-town rival Seattle U during the regular season. Pearson finished fourth on the team in minutes played with 1,525 and started all 19 matches he appeared in during the year.
Senior Justin Fiddes, who hails from San Diego, also played a key part along Washington's backline, helping the Huskies post an impressive 1.10 goals against average with just 22 goals allowed in 20 matches. Fiddes recorded four assists on the season including a helper against Seattle University in the NCAA First Round match. Fiddes was second on the team in minutes played with 1,704 and was one of just two players to start all 20 matches for the Huskies.
Bodily, a freshman from Eagle, Idaho, put together an impressive first year at Washington, recording three goals and a team-best eight assists. For his efforts, Bodily was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and earned first-team all-conference honors, ranking ninth in points (14) and second in assists (8). Bodily was one of just three freshman among the 36 members of the all-region team and the lone freshman from the Pac-12 on the squad.
This season marked the fourth time in the last five years the Huskies have had four players named to the All-Far West Region team with three UW players being named in 2015. Since 2011 when Coach Clark took over at UW, the program has seen 19 student-athletes earn 23 All-Far West Region honors.
The Huskies finished the 2017 season with a 12-7-1 overall record, reaching the NCAA tournament for the second-straight season and fifth time in seven seasons under Coach Clark.
