SEATTLE – Washington senior Amy-Eloise Neale has been named a finalist for the Honda Award for women's cross country, one of the top honors in the sport and in women's collegiate athletics. Neale was the NCAA runner-up at the Nov. 18 championships and one of just two women to post a repeat NCAA Top-10 finish.
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 42 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics". The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2018 Honda Cup which will be presented on a live telecast on CBS Sports Network on Monday, June 25, 2018, in downtown Los, Angeles.
The Honda Sport award winner for cross country will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
Neale is the second Husky ever nominated for the Honda Award for cross country. Kendra Schaaf was also a finalist in 2009 after she took NCAA runner-up honors.
The other three finalists are New Mexico's Ednah Kurgat, the NCAA Champion, and Charlotte Taylor of San Francisco and Allie Ostrander of Boise State, who finished third and fourth, respectively, behind Neale.
Neale led the Huskies at every race this season, earning All-Pac-12 First Team honors for the second year in a row along with All-West Region honors. She is the first Husky ever with back-to-back top-10 NCAA cross country finishes after placing eighth in 2016. Her second-place finished tied Schaaf and Regina Joyce for best ever by a Dawg.
Washington's list of Honda Award winners include some of the greatest female Huskies ever. Kelsey Plum won the women's basketball Honda Award for 2016-17. Prior to that, Krista Vansant won two-straight volleyball Honda Awards in 2013-14 and 2014-15, Danielle Lawrie won consecutive softball Honda Awards, and Courtney Thompson won the volleyball award in 2005-06.
