SEATTLE - Thirty-one women's teams and thirty-one men's teams remain with one race to go in the 2017 cross country campaign. Washington has both of its squads in the field for the NCAA Championships for the third time in the past four years, and the seventh time in school history. Saturday in Louisville, Ky., the Dawgs will run the course at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park, looking to put a stamp on another excellent season.
Up first will be the women's 6,000-meter race at 6 a.m. Pacific time followed by the men's 10,000-meter race an hour later at 7 a.m. Pacific. The races can be streamed online on Flotrack.org with a subscription fee.
Washington is one of just 17 institutions to qualify both its men's and women's teams for the championships, which will be hosted by the University of Louisville.
This will be the 14th NCAA appearance for the Husky men's team and the 24th overall appearance for the women. The women have now made 11 NCAA Championship fields in a row and 19 of the past 21.
The men come into the championships ranked 12th nationally after turning in a big performance at the West Regional Championships last Friday in Seattle. The Huskies finished second by just two points behind then-sixth-ranked Portland as Colby Gilbert (5th), Andrew Gardner (7th), Andy Snyder (9th), and Mahmoud Moussa (18th) all earned All-West Region honors and all seven Huskies finished in the top-31.
The women rank 22nd in the USTFCCCA poll entering the meet. Amy-Eloise Neale led the women's team at Regionals with a third-place individual finish, and the Huskies finished sixth as a team, but did enough to move on to nationals.
Neale has now led UW at every race this season and the past nine races dating back to last year. Third at both Pac-12s and Regionals this year, Neale will be shooting for a second-straight top-10 NCAA finish, as she was eighth last year in Terre Haute to lead the women's team to a 12th-place finish.
Senior Izzi Batt-Doyle runs at a second-straight NCAA meet, as she was 109th last year, and sophomore Nikki Zielinski will try to better her 162nd-place finish from her freshman season. Senior Anna Maxwell did not race at NCAAs last year but has a career-best finish of 107th from 2015. Junior Emily Hamlin also will run at NCAAs for the first time since 2015 and the second time of her career. The Dawgs will be without sophomore Kaitlyn Neal who had an injury at Regionals, so freshmen Allie Schadler and Kiera Marshall will look to step up at their first NCAA meet. Freshman Erica Schroeder also is traveling as the alternate.
The men expect to run the same seven from the Regional meet, led by three seniors in Gilbert, Gardner, and Johnathan Stevens. All three were in UW's top-five two years ago when the men placed eighth on the same Louisville course, which was the best finish for the Husky men since 1993. Gilbert earned All-America honors that year with a 32nd-place finish, Gardner was 96th, and Stevens was 178th.
The men have had four different No. 1 finishers this season, as Stevens started things off with a win at the Sundodger Invite, Gilbert led UW at the Dellinger Invite and Regionals, Gardner was the top Husky at the Wisconsin Invitational, and junior Mahmoud Moussa led the way at the Pac-12 Championships with a fifth-place finish in a big breakout run. Sophomore Andy Snyder has also made huge gains this season, breaking into the UW top-five for the first time at Wisconsin where he was 91st, and then making the top-10 at the Regional meet.
Washington has also received a big lift from a pair of true freshmen this season, as Talon Hull and Tibebu Proctor are set to run at their first NCAA Championships. Hull had an impressive run at the Dellinger early in the year, taking 13th, and then ran well at Pac-12s in 29th-place after coming back from an ankle sprain that caused him to miss Wisconsin. Proctor was the fifth Husky finisher at Regionals in his first 10k, just missing All-West Region by one spot as he took 26th. Sophomore Gavin Parpart will be the men's alternate, his last race came at Pac-12s where he finished 50th overall.
