Fung, Wong Earn Ranked Wins On Last Day Of Husky Invite
October 15, 2017 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – Stacey Fung and Vanessa Wong represented Washington women's tennis well as they earned wins against ranked opponents from Oregon on the last day of the Husky Invite on Sunday.
"Vanessa and Stacey played great again today," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "Matches against Oregon are always tough, it's always a battle. I told the girls that it's all about putting yourself in these situations over and over again to get better. We saw some good things and saw some things we can go back and work on."
Sunday morning began with Arkansas and Portland squaring off in singles with the Razorbacks winning all five matches. Once the teams were finished, Washington and Oregon matched up in the final round. The Huskies won just two matches as the Ducks took four.
No. 18 Fung took on No. 48 Alyssa Tobita from Oregon. The two played to three sets, with Fung taking the first with a score of 6-0 and Tobita taking the second, 6-4. The third set was tied up 3-3 before Fung scored three-straight points to take the set, 6-3, and the match.
"I've played Tobita once before," Fung said. "I lost the clinching match against Oregon last time, so it was nice to get the win today. Going into the third set, I cleared my mind and tried to turn the match around. I tried to focus on each point, not thinking too far ahead."
Wong, a freshman, picked up her second win over a ranked opponent this weekend. She defeated No. 78 Shweta Sangwan from Oregon in straight sets. Following a 6-1 victory in set one, set two was back and forth. Wong won set two with a score of 7-5.
"It was a lot of fun this weekend," Wong said. "I expected pretty crazy and pretty loud, and that's what it was. It was my first time to be part of a team event like this and I got great match experience."
In singles, Fung and Wong were both undefeated this weekend. They also won two matches each against ranked opponents.
After going undefeated on Friday and Saturday, Kenadi Hance lost her first match. Oregon's Julia Eshet won in two sets, 6-0, 6-2.
Both Angela Li and Alexis Prokopuik battled tough in their opening sets, but they would lose their matches in two. Lana Slavica also fell on Sunday, dropping her sets, 6-1, 6-3.
On the weekend, Washington went 4-4 in doubles and 8-7 in singles.
Up next for the Huskies is the Kansas Invitational from Oct. 27-29, in Lawrence, Kansas.
