Dawgs Head to Stanford Intercollegiate

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The University of Washington women's golf team returns to the tee box this week as it will play in the annual Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Dr. Condoleeza Rice. The 54-hole, three day event will be played on the par-71, 6,069 yard Poppy Hills Golf Course, Monday-Wednesday, Oct. 16-18.
THE FIELD: Washington will be joined by 14 other teams and based on the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, they are: No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 8 Stanford, No. 13 Northwestern, No. 22 Iowa State, No. 23 Florida State, No. 35 Washington, No. 36 Pepperdine, No. 44 San Jose State, No. 48 Oregon, No. 50 Cal, No. 75 Georgia, No. 90 UC Davis, No. 110 Cal Poly.
THE LINEUP: The Huskies will send sophomore Karen Miyamoto, junior Julianne Alvarez, freshman Rino Sasaki, junior Wenyung Keh and junior Sarah Rhee. Washington will be paired with host Stanford and fellow Pac-12 member California.
PAT LESSER HARBOTTLE: Four Huskies who are not travelling to California will compete at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational this week. Sophomore Ellen Takada, freshman Wenyan Ma, sophomore Christina Wang and sophomore Eun Won Park will all play 54 holes in Tacoma, in the annual event hosted by Seattle U. Washington has won the team title for the last three years while Julianne Alvarez is the two-time defending individual champion.
FALL SCHEDULE: Washington is halfway through its fall schedule as it is competing in four fall tournaments along with hosting one event before spring play starts. After opening the season at the Schooner Fall Classic, UW hosted the Edean Ihlanfeld, Oct. 10-11, followed by the Stanford Intercollegiate, Oct. 16-18. The Dawgs will wrap up fall play Oct. 23-24 at the Pac-12 Preview played at Nanea Golf Club in Hawaii.
DAWGS WIN THE EDEAN: For the first time since the 2015-16 season, Washington hosted the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Sahalee Golf Club in Sammamish, Wash. And for the first time since 2014, the Huskies took home the team title finishing with a 7-over 871. All four of UW's scorers in the lineup finished in the top 10 led by Karen Miyamoto who took fourth for her highest finish as a Dawg.
SASAKI SHINING: Freshman Rino Sasaki (Tokyo, Japan) has made a quick impact in her first two events as a Husky as she has been one of UW's top three scorer's in each of her tournaments. She has yet to finish below 13th as she opened the season with a tie for 13th and was UW's top finisher at the Schooner Fall Classic. She followed that with a seventh-place tie at the Edean Ihlanfeldt.
LAST SEASON RESULTS: Featuring a lineup of three sophomores and two freshmen, Washington posted four top five finishes a year ago along with finishing eighth at the NCAA Albuquerque Regionals. Wenyung Keh led the team with a 74.73 stroke average, followed by Julianne Alvarez (74.91) and Karen Miyamoto (75.63).
SUMMER STANDOUTS: Washington's student-athletes had a busy summer, competing in many amateur events. Junior Julianne Alvarez won two events, the Washington State Golf Association Women's Amateur Championship and the Pacific Northwest Women's Amateur Championship. She, along with Karen Miyamoto and Sarah Rhee, also qualified for the 2017 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. Miyamoto and Rhee each made the Round of 16 in San Diego.
