Hance Leads UW On Day One Of Husky Invite
October 13, 2017 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – Kenadi Hance went undefeated in both doubles and singles to lead Washington women's tennis in the first day of the Husky Invite, including a three-set comeback victory in singles.
"I thought it was really great to get back out there as a team and see everyone competing together again," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "It was nice for Vanessa (Wong) and Angela (Li) to get their first wins as Huskies. I feel like everyone focused on getting better rather than their scores, so hopefully that continues in day two and day three."
The Huskies went 2-4 in doubles on day one, splitting their wins and losses equally between Arkansas and Oregon. In the two rounds today, the teams agreed to play just one set in order to mix up doubles pairs if wanted. Hance won both of her doubles matches, the first with Vanessa Wong in a 6-3 win and the second with Angela Li, taking that set 6-4.
Hance capped off the singles around against Portland with a three-set win. After dropping the first set 6-4 and being down 3-0 in the second set, she stormed back to win the match, taking the second set with a score of 6-3 and the third, 6-2.
"I don't think she had the start she wanted, but she settled in," Stephenson said. "It was great for her to face a little adversity early and battle that to get the win."
Wong, a freshman, had her first tastes of college tennis today. After winning in doubles with Hance, she took down Portland's Anna Oberg in two sets, 6-2, 6-0, finishing her match before the other five.
"It was awesome," Wong said. "I was a little bit nervous at the beginning, but the energy was so high and everyone was super supportive all day. I expected to be more nervous, but as we went on and people started getting loud, the nerves left by the end."
Three other Huskies picked up wins in singles. Lana Slavica won in two sets, 6-2, 6-1, against Laura Okasaki. Senior Alexis Prokopuik defeated Emily Soares, 6-0, 6-3, and No. 18 Stacey Fung earned the win over Radina Dimitrova, 6-2, 6-1.
On Saturday, the day will start with doubles again. Washington will play duos from Portland while Oregon and Arkansas pairings face off. Following doubles, UW will play against players from Arkansas in singles. The Ducks and the Pilots will match up in singles once the Huskies and Razorbacks finish.
