SEATTLE - The season hits the halfway mark for the Husky cross country teams this week, as the Dawgs return to Madison, Wisc. for the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational featuring large and elite races on both the men's and women's sides. The outcome of Friday's races at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course will go a long way in determining the participants for the NCAA Championships come November.
Wisconsin traditionally assembles the largest fields of the year with the most ranked squads outside of the NCAA Championships. The women's 6k race on Friday will have 16 of the current top-30 ranked teams in the USTFCCCA Coaches Poll, including the 11th-ranked Huskies. The men's field is even more stacked, with 20 of the top-30 teams and five of the top-10. Strong team finishes at Wisconsin therefore typically pay off big for at-large berths in the NCAA meet, as points are awarded for regular season wins over other NCAA qualifiers.
The event starts with women's and men's "B" races at 9 a.m. Pacific for the women and 9:40 a.m. for the men. The championship races go at 10:20 a.m. Pacific for the women and 11 a.m. Pacific for the men. Flotrack.org will provide a live stream of the event, for a subscription fee.
Last year, the Husky women's team captured the team title for their biggest win in several seasons, with Amy-Eloise Neale leading the squad with a fourth-place finish. Izzi Batt-Doyle also made a big impression last year as she won the "B" race. She'll be in the main championship field this time around. Kaitlyn Neal, Nikki Zielinski, and Anna Maxwell are all back after top-50 finishes last season looking to help the Huskies to another strong team finish. UW also won the team title back in 2011.
The men were 16th at Wisconsin a year ago and return six of the top-seven from last season. Last year Colby Gilbert was 63rd, Johnathan Stevens and Andrew Gardner were 90th and 91st, and Mahmoud Moussa was 135th overall. Fred Huxham led the way in 37th last year but did not make the trip, and UW will also miss freshman standout Talon Hull this week as Hull hurt his ankle in practice, but the Huskies will have lots of new faces at Wisconsin this year compared to last, including freshman Tibebu Proctor, sophomore Charlie Barringer, redshirt freshmen Nate Beamer, David Strome, Gavin Parpart, and Nick Laccinole.
