January 12, 2017 | Women's Tennis
HONOLULU – In their 2017 season opener, the Washington women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 victory today over Hawai'i at the UH Tennis Complex.
"This was a great win for us today," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "Hawai'i is a very good team and played really well. I was pleased with the toughness we showed in singles and winning all of our three set matches, we have a quick turnaround and are ready to get out there again tomorrow."
The Huskies success in doubles from last season continued into the new year, as they took the doubles point to begin the match. Kenadi Hance and Alexis Prokopuik were the first to finish on court three, defeating Michelle Pits and Alzbeta Houbova 6-2. After dropping the match on court two, the Dawgs clinched the doubles with a tough win on court one by the 35th ranked duo in the nation Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi, defeating Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma 7-5.
"We had our backs up against the wall in doubles and I was really impressed with the way the girls responded and clinched that point," said Stephenson.
Transfer Prokopuik picked up her second win of the day, and was the first to finish in singles, defeating Roxanne Resma 6-0, 6-2 to give UW a 2-0 lead. After Abbes defeated Cindy Nguyen 6-4, 6-3, Hawai'i took a point back on court six to put the score at 3-1.
The final three matches all went to a third set, but Washington was able to battle back and grab wins on each court. Kobayashi defeated Marina Hruba 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 to clinch the win for UW, with Stacey Fung defeating Melounova 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 for her first win over a ranked opponent of the season. Sophomore Hance defeated Pits on court five to close out the match and bring the final score to 6-1.
"We fought on every court, and coming off with a great win like today is a great way to start the season," said Abbes. "It's great to be in competition mode again, and being out here with this team is priceless."
The Huskies will continue their opening week in Hawai'i when they face Kansas State tomorrow at 1 p.m. You can keep up with the team by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, or by checking out our website at GoHuskies.com.
