January 13, 2017 | Women's Tennis
HONOLULU – In their second match of the season, the Washington women's tennis team had another great performance against Kansas State today, picking up a 7-0 win at the UH Tennis Complex.
"Today was another good win for us and we are all happy with the way we opened the season with these two matches," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "Everyone took care of business on their courts and were focused on their game plans from start to finish."
The Huskies took the first doubles match on court one, as the 35th ranked duo of Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi defeated Milli Stretton and Ana Garcia Navas 6-0. On court three, Kenadi Hance and Alexis Prokopuik took care of Iva Bago and Livia Cirnu 6-2 to clinch the doubles point for an early 1-0 lead.
"I thought we did a great job setting the tone for the season with high energy and intensity throughout the entire match," said Hance. "It was really great to see how we compete together as a team and see the new girls really compete for the first time."
Kobayashi was the first to finish her match in singles for Washington, grabbing a 6-2, 6-0 win on court three to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Prokopuik was next to finish, grabbing her fourth win of the road trip with a 6-3, 6-0 win on court four.
"The match today was competitive and everyone was playing with a lot of heart and fight," said Prokopuik. "I just enjoyed the match and used the momentum from yesterday's win to close out the trip with a positive win."
With the Huskies a point away from the win, freshman Katarina Kopcalic won her first career match 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the victory and move Washington to 2-0 on the young season.
"I'm happy that I bounced back after my matches yesterday and with the way I competed," said Kopcalic. "I'm also happy with the way the team supported each other and to get my first regular season win."
On court two, Nour Abbes defeated Stretton 6-4, 6-1 for her fourth victory in two days, while Stacey Fung defeated Carlina Costamagna 6-1, 6-3 shortly after. Hance closed out the match on court five, picking up a tough first set 7-5, and winning the second 6-3 to seal the 7-0 shutout.
"We have a lot of information from these matches to go back to work on next week to improve and prepare for our next matches," said Stephenson.
The Huskies will make a quick return home for the week before heading back out on the road for their next matches in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They will face Stephenson's alma mater, the Tide, on Saturday January 21st at 1 p.m. PT, and take on Illinois the following day at 9 a.m. PT in a neutral-site match.
