SEATTLE - The Husky cross country squads take a step up in field size and competition level this week from the season opening Sundodger two weeks ago, as another strong field including a pair of top-five Oregon teams is set to race the Washington Invitational at Jefferson Park Golf Course this Saturday. Washington will add more runners to the mix as it looks to make continued progress towards the crucial races to come in October.
This is the third year for the Washington Invitational, with a men's field featuring four ranked teams in No. 3 Oregon, No. 21 Washington, No. 24 Washington State, and No. 29 Colorado State. No. 4 Oregon and No. 12 Washington highlight the women's field that also includes a Harvard team making the long trip west.
Washington's individual Sundodger winners will look to lead the way again on Saturday. Colby Gilbert earned his first win two weeks ago, with Andrew Gardner close behind in third. Also entered this week are Fred Huxham and Johnathan Stevens who sat out the opener. Blake Nelson, Mahmoud Moussa, Keith Williams, Andy Snyder, Julius Diehr and Ben Mahony will be in uniform for the men as well, with some of the freshmen competing unattached.
Charlotte Prouse and Katie Knight crossed the line side by side at the Sundodger and they'll be part of a large group of Huskies competing in uniform this week including veterans Amy-Eloise Neale, Anna Maxwell, Kaylee Flanagan, Izzi Batt-Doyle, Emily Hamlin, Kelly Lawson, Grace Hodge, and Joey Bosserman. Also expected to compete in uniform for the first time after impressive openers at the Sundodger are freshmen Kaitlyn Neal and Nikki Zielinski. Neal and Zielinski were fifth and sixth, respectively, at the Sundodger.
