
Huskies In Seventh Place After First Day In New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – After day one of the 2016 William H. Tucker Invitational, the University of Washington men's golf team is in seventh place with a team score of 589 (293-296) at the par-72, 7,580-yard University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque. The final 18 holes are slated for a Saturday (Sept. 24) completion.
"Overall today, we saw way more good things happen than bad, which is an encouraging sign for the future," said head coach Alan Murray. "Tonight we will gather as a group and go over a couple of things in preparation for tomorrow. We will learn from today and continue to work hard towards our goals this season."
San Diego State holds the team lead at 3-under 573 after a first-round 8-under 280 and a second-round 5-over 293. Colorado State is second at 5-over, followed by four-time defending tournament champion and host New Mexico at 7-over. BYU is fourth at 8-over, while UTEP rounds out the top five at 10-over.
Senior Corey Pereira leads the Huskies and is in a tie for fifth overall at 1-under par 143 after a first-round even par 72 and a second-round 1-under 71. The Cameron Park, Calif. native birdied a team-high nine holes on Friday.
"Corey is the leader of the team and someone everyone looks to for guidance," said Murray. "He's a really strong player for us and it showed again today."
There is a three-way individual tie between BYU's Rhett Rasmussen (69-71), Colorado State's Blake Canon (71-69) and San Diego State's PJ Samiere (69-71). Pepperdine's Roy Cootes is in fourth at 2-under.
After firing a 1-under par in the opening round, Sam Warkentin is also in the top-25 as he is tied for 23rd at 5-over 148 (71-77).
"Sam had a great opening round this morning which was very encouraging to see," said Murray. "He will be a big player for us in the future, there's just something special about him."
With a total of 92 golfers competing, junior Frank Garber (76-73) and freshman Henry Lee (74-75) are both tied for 28th at 5-over 149 while senior Kevin Kwon is tied for 81st at 13-over 157 (78-79).
