
Men's Golf To Tee Off At New Mexico

SEATTLE -- The University of Washington men's golf team resumes its fall schedule this weekend when it participates in the 63rd annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, Sept. 23-24, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament will be contested on Friday, while the final 18 holes are slated for a Saturday completion on the par-72, 7,580-yard University of New Mexico Championship Course. A live scoring link courtesy of Golfstat will be available here, with a 6:30 a.m. PT start scheduled for both days.
The Huskies, who occupy the No. 24 spot in the most recent Golfweek poll, will square off against four additional ranked squads in No. 23 San Diego State, No. 25 UNLV, No. 31 New Mexico and No. 41 Pepperdine. In addition, Washington will be afforded an early look at three other Pac-12 schools in Arizona, Colorado and Washington State, while New Mexico, San Diego State, San Diego, Pepperdine, UNLV, Wyoming, Louisiana Tech, Denver, Colorado State, Texas Tech, New Mexico State, BYU and Texas El Paso round out the 16-team field.
Head coach Alan Murray has penciled in the starting lineup of senior Corey Pereira, freshman Sam Warkentin, junior Frank Garber, senior Kevin Kwon and freshman Henry Lee.
Last weekend at the Gopher Invitational, the Huskies finished 13th with a 37-over 889 (298-295-296) during a windy three courses at Windsong Farm Golf Course in Maple Plain, Minnesota. Washington was led by Corey Pereira and Sam Warkentin, who both tied for 27th with a 7-over 220. Warkentin was impressive over the final 18 as he climbed 23 spots with his 2-under 69, which tied the low round of the day. Starting on hole 10, Warkentin finished his first nine holes at even par and then carded three birdies on the back nine to finish at 2-under moving his final score to 7-over 200.
The Tucker Intercollegiate, which was named in honor of former University of New Mexico groundskeeper William H. Tucker, is the second-oldest men's college tournament in the country behind only the New England Intercollegiate. Previous individual competitors include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tommy Armour III, Tim Herron, Duffy Waldorf, Notah Begay and Matt Kuchar.
Welcome Alan Murray: The Huskies are under new leadership for the first time in 15 years as Washington announced the hiring of Murray as the 10th head coach in program history this August. Murray came to Montlake after spending the last six years at UAB where he earned GolfWeek's 2014 National Coach of the Year honors and led the Blazers to their first-ever Regional Title in 2015. He played collegiately at Toledo from 1998-2002 earning All-MAC honors and leading the Rockets to the 2002 MAC Championship. Following college, the Ireland native competed on the European Challenge Tour and the Europo Tour before beginning his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at UAB in 2011.
Summer Success: The Huskies had several current, incoming and former players put together some extremely stellar performances during the summer highlighted by former Dawgs C.T. Pan and Joel Dahmen earning their PGA Tour card. Sophomore Carl Yuan won the prestigious 115th Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Championship in July to take home the Macan Cup and advanced to the round of 16 at the 121st Amateur Championship in July.
Returners: The Huskies return a wealth of experience from the 2016 season in senior Corey Pereira, who earned GolfWeek All-American Honorable Mention honors a year ago along with a First Team All-Pac-12 selection a year ago. Pereira led the team with a 71.4 stroke averaged and is ranked 12th by the WAGR. He's joined by sophomore Carl Yuan who only finished outside of the top 25 twice in 11 events last season and picked up Pac-12 All-Freshman team honors. Junior Frank Garber was an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection a year ago and posted four top 10 finishes on the year. Senior Kevin Kwon also returns along with junior Jordan Lu.
Newcomers: Washington welcomes four talented freshmen to its roster this season in Daniel List, Sam Warkentin, Henry Lee and Shamu Bodhidatta. List joins the Huskies by way of Surrey, England and is coming off of a stellar campaign prior to joining the Dawgs, finishing first at the ISGA British High Schools National Final. Warkentin hails from the state of Washington and won 14 tournaments with a 71.1 tournament scoring average as a senior at Bainbridge Island High School. He became the first 3-time WJGA Overall State Champion as well. Lee, out of Coquitlam, B.C., joins UW with some big tournament titles under his belt along with a third-place finish at the 2015 Canadian Junior Boys Championship. Bodhidatta hails from Bangkok, Thailand and has a wealth of experience on the international level where he's won the Mercedez-Benz Junior Golf Championships and the Singha-TSGU Junior Future Tour Championship in January of 2016. He also finished second at the APJGA Thailand at Grand Prix Golf Club in July of 2016.
Following this weekend's tournament, the Huskies return to the course on Sunday, Oct. 2 in Fort Worth, Texas for the Nike Collegiate at the Colonial Country Club.
