September 13, 2016 | Men's Tennis
With the start of the 2016-17 fall season just around the corner for the Washington men's tennis team, preseason rankings and invitational draws have been coming in for the Dawgs; led by junior Mitch Stewart's 68th national rank in singles and making the qualifying singles draw at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships.
Second on the team last season with 21 wins in singles, the junior from Federal Way, Wash. ranked as high as 78th nationally during the 2015-16 season, and was named to the All-Pac-12 Second team for the second straight year. Stewart was also named the Northwest Region's Player to Watch by the ITA, and was an All-Academic Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection. He will begin play in the qualifying singles draw on October 3rd.
Appearing on the list of alternates for the qualifying draw in singles are sophomore Enzo Sommer and senior Gal Hakak, coming in as the second and fourth alternates respectively.
Last year's doubles team of Piers Foley and Wendell Watanabe also made the qualifying draw at the All-American Championships, as they will begin play on October 3rd as well. The duo played all of their matches together on court one for the Huskies last year, amassing seven wins including a huge 7-6 (8-6) win over the 17th ranked doubles team in the country against Pepperdine.
The Huskies will begin their 2016-17 season with the All-American Championships on October 3rd, followed by their ITA Regional from October 13th to the 17th in Berkeley, Calif. The Dawgs will then participate in a USTA Futures event in Birmingham, Ala. from October 29th to November 6th, with the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships scheduled for November 3rd to the 6th. Washington rounds out their fall at the Jack Kramer Invite from November 10th to the 13th, with another USTA Futures event on their schedule from November 12th to the 20th in Pensacola, Fla.
