Davison, Carcano, Mantel Move On At U-23 Worlds
August 23, 2016 | Men's Rowing
Three more Huskies advance from quarters and semis in Tuesday's racing.
In a relatively light day of action at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships Tuesday in Rotterdam, three UW rowers advanced to A/B semifinals or A finals.
American Ben Davison, who'll return to the UW as a sophomore this fall, finished second in the first of four quarterfinals in the men's single sculls. That placement moved him into the A/B semifinal Wednesday, during which he'll try to qualify for Friday's A final.
Both Husky rowers in the men's eight competition moved from their semifinals into the A final. Michiel Mantel and the Netherlands (pictured), won the first semi, beating second-place Romania by just over two seconds, while Guglielmo Carcano and Italy eight did just enough, taking third in the second semi, just six one-hundredths of a second behind second-place Ukraine, but well in front of the fourth-place Americans.
Mantel, Carcano and their crews will row in the men's eight A final on Friday in the final event of the regatta.
In a lightweight men's double sculls C/D semifinal race, Husky Samuel O'Brien and his partner won their race to advance to the C final on Thursday.
In the men's coxless four semifinal, Luca Lovisolo and his Italian team finished sixth and will next row in the B final on Thursday.
Davison is the only UW rower who will race on Wednesday – in the men's single sculls A/B semifinal – but the action heats back up on Thursday when several of the A finals will be contested.
