Huskies open regular season Friday at Utah Valley
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Washington men's soccer team fell, 1-0, in an exhibition match Saturday at New Mexico. The teams played a 90-minutes match (during which the goal was scored) and then played two additional 20-minute periods.
A crowd of 1,467 fans were in attendance for the homecoming of UW senior defender Justin Schmidt (pictured), who attended high school in Albuquerque, as well as Husky head coach Jamie Clark, who spent four seasons (2002-05) as a Lobos assistant coach early in his career.
The game's lone goal came in the 84th minute as UNM's Niko Hansen dribbled through traffic and scored into the upper right corner of the goal.
After the completion of the 90 minutes, and seeing as the result of the match will not count in either team's official record, the Huskies and Lobos played an additional two 20-minutes halves.
Husky goalkeeper Auden Schilder recorded six saves in his 85 minutes of action while Saif Kerewala played the remainder of the match in the goal, making two saves without allowing a goal. A total of 26 UW players saw action in the match.
The Huskies open the season in earnest on Friday when the Dawgs travel to Orem, Utah, to face Utah Valley in the season-opener. The first home game is Sept. 4 vs. Oral Roberts.
