A pair of future Huskies helped lead their summer team to a title, scoring both runs in final game.
Two incoming Husky softball players – Nicole Bates and Kaija Gibson – teamed up to win the Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF) 18-U Premier National Championship Saturday in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Bates (Ceres, Calif.) and Gibson (Redmond, Wash.) helped lead the Firecrackers Rico team to a 2-0 victory over the Cruisers in the title game. In fact, the two future UW teammates scored the game's two runs in the first inning. Bates led off the bottom of the first with a single and Gibson, attempting to sacrifice her to second base, reached on an error. Bates then stole third and scored on an errant throw while Gibson eventually scored on a sacrifice fly.
"We've been working so hard for this," Bates told FloSoftball.com, "and I honestly can't explain how great it feels."
Bates also played in the first-ever PGF High School All-American game Friday night, singling and scoring in the first inning.
Additionally, Bates was selected to the Louisville Slugger Hit Club, a group of 10 elite college-bound softball players. Established last year, the Hit Club includes a series of competitions and instruction for the players, who visited Disneyland yesterday (see photo, above; Bates is back row, second from left).
