SEATTLE – The first of four days of Pac-12 Track & Field Championship action at Husky Track is in the books, and the three Husky multi-event athletes showed what the home track advantage could mean for the rest of the squad, as they all went out at a PR pace on day one of the decathlon and heptathlon. Josh Gordon and Cole Jensen both rank in the top-five on the men's side with C.J. Smith currently ninth for the women.
The multi-events will wrap up on Sunday at Husky Track with five more men's events and three more on the women's side, all starting at 10:30 a.m. with free admission. The action today was the first Pac-12 track action in Seattle since UW last hosted in 1997, in a meet inside Husky Stadium. The team points scored by the multi-event athletes this weekend will be added to the totals for the remainder of the championships held at Husky Track on May 14-15.
In the decathlon, Gordon and Jensen both had day one PRs to put themselves in good position for Sunday. Gordon, bolstered by a big win in the long jump, sits third overall with 3,922 points, while Jensen is in fifth with 3,832. In their only previous decathlons this season at Mt. SAC, Gordon had 3,670 points through day one and Jensen had 3,706 points.
Senior C.J. Smith scored 3,008 points on her first day in the heptathlon, sitting ninth out of the 14 competitors. She was up over 70 points from her day one total at the Mt. SAC Relays last month.
Defending champ and Spanish Olympic hopeful Pau Tonnesen of Arizona holds the lead with 4,025 points, while USC's Amalie Iuel opened a lead of more than 200 points with an outstanding 3,709 point day.
After opening with solid times in the 100-meters, Jensen fourth at 11.05 seconds and Gordon sixth at 11.14, Gordon had one of the big highlights of the day in the long jump. With a best of 22-8 after two attempts, Gordon came through with the biggest jump of his career on his final attempt, flying to 24-3 ½ to get the win. Jensen also had a career-best long jump of 22-3 to take fifth in the event.
Gordon added a third PR in the shot put at 37-2 ½, then Jensen had a standout performance in the day's fourth event, the high jump. Jensen had consecutive third-attempt clearances at 6-6 ¾ and 6-8, getting especially fired up about wobbling but leaving the bar standing at 6-8. That was good for second overall in the event.
In the final event of the day, Gordon was escorted down the home stretch of the 400-meters by teammates and friends, and he powered to a big PR of 48.87 seconds, winning his heat. Gordon's previous PR before today was 49.93. Jensen finished seventh overall in 49.57, just off his PR of 49.44.
Smith opened her day with a big career-best in the 100-meter hurdles, running 14.81 seconds. The senior then matched her career-best with a 5-1 ¾ clearance in the high jump. She took 10th in the shot put at 33-7 ¼, and then finished sixth in the 200-meters in 24.91 seconds, her fastest of the year.
