May 29, 2016 | Softball
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Washington softball team had its 2016 season come to a close in the NCAA Super Regional round on Saturday (May 28) as the Huskies fell to No. 6 Alabama, 5-2 in game two at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Washington ends its season with an overall record of 39-15.
Alabama hit a three-run home run in the top of the third inning to stake out to a lead it never relinquished. Trailing 4-0, the Huskies trimmed its deficit to just two runs in the home half of the inning, but were held scoreless through the final four frames.
Junior Ali Aguilar and sophomore Taylor Van Zee each recorded an RBI in the contest while senior Jennie McNeill went 2-for-2 at the plate.
Freshman starter Taran Alvelo took the loss in the circle, throwing 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs – none earned. Sophomore RHP Madi Schreyer came on in relief in the third inning with two outs. The Woodinville, Wash. native gave up just two hits and one earned run while striking out three batters.
In the third, the Tide reached on an error and drew a walk before the three-run home run. After back-to-back singles tacked on another run, Schreyer replaced Alvelo in the circle and induced a ground out to end the four-run inning.
In the home half of the frame, Washington used three hits to score two runs and trim its deficit, 4-2. Sophomore Julia DePonte ignited the rally with her 11th double of the season and after she moved into scoring position off McNeill's bunt, Aguilar's single up the middle scored Washington's first run of the game. Senior Kimberlee Souza then followed suit with a single to place runners on the corners and Alabama was forced to make a pitching change as Osorio replaced starter Sydney Littlejohn. In the next at-bat, Van Zee's sac fly scored Aguilar.
Leading 4-2, Alabama scored a run in the sixth to take a three-run lead. After a strikeout, the Tide reached on an infield single and one out later, a single through the left side scored a run.
The Huskies left runners at first and second in both the fourth and sixth innings before going down in order in the seventh.
