STANFORD, Calif. -- Trailing 4-2 late, the No. 13-ranked University of Washington softball team exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to close out the regular-season finale in comeback fashion beating Stanford, 10-5 on Saturday afternoon (May 14) at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium in Stanford, Calif.
Sophomore RHP Madi Schreyer (12-4) earned the win in the circle, throwing four innings, allowing four hits and four earned runs while striking out four. Senior Hailey Bator earned the save, entering in the fifth inning with no outs and a runner at first. The lefty did not allow a hit while striking out a pair.
The Husky bats recorded 10 hits in the game -- its 23rd double-digit hit performance of the season. Sophomore Julia DePonte and senior Kimberlee Souza each homered in the contest. Junior Ali Aguilar recorded a pair of RBI, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored while junior Casey Stangel went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.
Trailing 4-2 in the fifth, the Husky offense exploded for five runs to reclaim a lead it built in the first inning. After Stangel drew a one-out walk, DePonte hit her second home run in as many days to tie the game, 4-4. Washington took the lead later in the inning off Aguilar's two-out two RBI single. Following the homer, freshman Tannon Snow singled to left and sophomore Trysten Melhart drew a walk. The pair advanced off a groundout before the Pac-12 leader in runs batted in delivered the single to give Washington back the lead, 6-4. The inning continued as Aguilar advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored off Van Zee's single.
The Dawgs scored three more runs in the sixth to take a 10-5 lead. Souza led off the inning with a solo home run before the Huskies drew five walks to score two more runs.
Washington took the game's first lead in the first inning, improving to 30-6 when scoring first. Aguilar led off the game with a double and after advancing to third off a bunt, she scored off Souza's RBI groundout.
Stanford tied the game in the bottom of the second, hitting a one-out double and advancing to third off a fly out before scoring off a fielding error.
The tie was short-lived however as the Huskies used a two-out rally to retake the lead in the third. Souza and Flores drew back-to-back walks before Stangel doubled down the left field line to score Souza and give the Dawgs a 2-1 advantage.
Stanford took its first lead of the series in the bottom of the third, hitting a three-run home run to take a 4-2 lead.
Washington will find out their seed in the NCAA Tournament tomorrow as the selection show will air on ESPNU at 7 p.m. PT.
