SEATTLE -- The No. 12-ranked University of Washington softball team registered 14 hits, including nine extra base hits, to power past Weber State in five innings, 14-6 in its NCAA Regional opener on Friday evening (May 20) in front of 1,321 fans at Husky Softball Stadium.
Sophomore Julia DePonte was one hit away from the cycle, recording two triples which tied a single game school record at Washington. The third baseman also doubled and singled in the game. The Huskies recorded six doubles in the contest, which also tied a program record.
DePonte went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in to lead the offense while junior Ali Aguilar, senior Kimberlee Souza and junior Casey Stangel each went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Freshman Tannon Snow hit her sixth home run of the season in the second inning.
Sophomore RHP Madi Schreyer earned the win in the circle, throwing 3.2 innings after entering the game in the second inning with one-out. The Woodinville, Wash. native gave up two runs on six hits while striking out a pair. Stangel made her ninth start of the season, throwing 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on three hits.
Washington will face Minnesota at 1 p.m. Saturday (May 21) in the winners' bracket final of the four-team, double-elimination regional, while Weber State will play North Dakota State at 3:30 p.m. in an elimination game. Minnesota defeated NDSU, 7-2, in Friday's first game.
After giving up a three-run home run in the first inning, Washington answered in the home half of the inning with two runs of their own. After back-to-back walks, an RBI groundout by Stangel and DePonte's first triple trimmed the Husky deficit to one run, 3-2.
Weber State answered in the second, plating another run to take a 4-2 lead. After a single and a walk, Schreyer replaced Stangel in the circle. The Wildcats used another single to advance the runner before scoring off a sac fly to centerfield.
Trailing 4-2, Washington used nine hits to score nine unanswered runs -- five in the second inning and four in the third to take an 11-4 lead. Snow's leadoff solo blast highlighted the second and Aguilar's bases clearing double broke the game open in the third.
After a scoreless fourth frame, Weber State tacked on two more runs in the fifth. The Wildcats strung together back-to-back singles before hitting a two-RBI double.
Washington again answered, however, hitting four consecutive doubles to score three runs and push the game into run-rule territory in the bottom of the fifth. Van Zee started the rally with her team-leading 15th double of the season followed by back-to-back-to-back doubles by Souza, Stangel and DePonte.
