May 01, 2016 | Softball
SEATTLE -- The No. 10-ranked University of Washington softball team secured a series win over Utah with an 8-0 shutout in six innings Saturday night at Husky Softball Stadium. Starting pitcher Casey Stangel hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to end the game early while also earning the save in the circle.
Washington (32-10, 13-7 Pac-12) scored eight runs on 10 hits, led by Stangel's four runs batted in. Freshman Morganne Flores hit her sixth home run of the season in the fifth inning to give the Huskies a 3-0 advantage. Junior Ali Aguilar and Flores each recorded a pair of hits to lead the offense.
Sophomore Madi Schreyer (9-2) and Stangel combined for a four-hit shutout in the circle. Schreyer earned the win, throwing 2.1 innings, allowing one hit with a strikeout. Stangel got the save after she re-entered the game in the fifth with two-outs and a pair of runners on. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Stangel induced a ground out to end the inning and preserve Washington's 1-0 lead.
Utah threatened in the third, loading the bases with one-out. After Schreyer replaced Stangel in the circle, the sophomore did her job to induce a groundout to Aguilar who turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
After three scoreless frames, Washington took the game's first lead in the bottom of the fourth. Flores drew a leadoff walk and two outs later, a hit-by-pitch placed runners at first and second. Senior Dani Braun then worked the count full before delivering an RBI single to score pinch runner Amirah Milloy from second.
Utah loaded the bases again in the fifth, but after re-entering the game, Stangel induced a groundout to put an end to the threat. In the home half of the inning, senior Kimberlee Souza singled before Flores crushed her sixth home run of the season to give Washington a 3-0 lead.
After Braun drew a leadoff walk in the sixth, Aguilar and sophomore Taylor Van Zee hit back-to-back singles. Souza was then hit-by-pitch for the 45th time in her career, which ties a school record and gave Washington a 4-0 lead. In the next at-bat, Stangel worked the count full before her grand slam gave the Huskies an eight-run lead and invoked the run-rule.
Washington and Utah play the series finale tomorrow (May 1) at Husky Softball Stadium at noon.
