SEATTLE – Washington got some final reps in before hosting the Pac-12 Championships today with the annual Ken Shannon Invitational at Husky Track. The Dawgs got wins in fourteen events on a warm, breezy day.
The Husky sprinters collected a handful of the victories, starting with another impressive run from senior Naivasha Sophusson Smith in the 100m hurdles. After posting a PR of 13.81 last weekend at WSU, Sophusson Smith won in a time of 13.85 today into a slight headwind. Senior Kimberly Stueckle also had her best time of the year, going 14.03 for third. Eric Simpson also won the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 14.68 seconds.
The Huskies had the top four spots in the women's 400m hurdles, led by freshman Morganne Hill in 1:01.20, and freshman Carly Lester was second in 1:01.57, with senior Krista Armstead third at 1:01.98, a season's best, and Nicole Harris ran a season-best 1:04.03. On the men's side, senior Kaid Tipton was third in a time of 54.41.
Alexis Ford and Cydnicia Wade went 1-2 in the women's 200-meters, with Ford just leaning for the win in 24.30 to 24.32 for Wade. Those were the fastest times run for each but a 2.8 tailwind was just a little too much for PR purposes. Danica Person also won the second heat with a 25.60 PR. Ford was also third overall in the 400-meters in 55.42 seconds and Carolyn Birkenfeld was fifth in 56.01 with freshman Imani Apostol sixth in a big season's-best of 56.36.
Senior Quadelle Satterwhite got a win in the men's 200-meters running 21.47 into a headwind, with fellow senior Travis Marshall second in 21.66. Satterwhite and Marshall were also second and third in the 100-meters in times of 10.74 and 10.75, respectively. Freshman Ryan Croson just missed breaking the 48-second mark with a 400-meters victory in 48.01. Andrew Brown pulled up late with an injury but still crossed second in 48.57 and Andrew Prentice ran 48.58, with Michael Thomas going 49.42 and Andrew Kozel running a time of 49.44.
Six more wins came in the field events, with a number of big season's-bests. Freshman Chase Smith made the 17-foot mark for the first time in his career to win the pole vault, going 17-0 ¼. Soon-to-be Olympian Diamara Planell Cruz won the women's vault at 13-9 ¾, with junior Elizabeth Quick getting a make of 13-5 ¾, while Tori Franzen, Kaitlin Zinsli, and Candace Ho all made 12-8, a big PR of nearly eight inches for Ho.
Sophomore Jack Lembcke had a big win in the discus with a best of 171-1, just off his PR of 172-9 but his best so far this year. Frank Catelli and Dan Boyden also had season-bests, with Catelli throwing 167-11 and Boyden 166-2, just six inches off his PR. Catelli also had a consistent shot put series, going 59-4 ¾ on his best to win that event. Sophomore Gina Flint won both the women's shot and discus, with a solid shot put of 49-7, just a quarter inch off her season-best. She threw 147-5 in the discus and Onyie Chibuogwu threw 145-2 for second.
Another win came in the women's triple jump where Alanna Coker fought with some headwinds but got a best mark of 38-4 ¼ for the win.
In the mid-distances, senior Derrick Daigre took second in the 800-meters in 1:50.41, with Mason Fletcher third in 1:52.20. Keith Williams and Mahmoud Moussa had season-best times in the 1,500-meters, Williams taking fourth in 3:51.49 and Moussa fifth in 3:52.40.
Sophomore Amy-Eloise Neale dropped down to 800-meters, and took second with a time of 2:09.64, while Hannah Derby was third in 2:12.41. Josephine Bosserman took third in the women's 1,500-meters in 4:33.23.
