Huskies Fall To No. 19 Stanford
April 08, 2016 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 47 Washington Huskies fell to No. 19 Stanford today in a 6-1 match at Bill Quillian stadium to fall to 12-9 on the season and 3-5 in the Pac-12.
Washington began by surrendering the doubles point for only the sixth time this season on courts two and three. Elianne Douglas-Miron and Tami Grende were first to fall on court two 6-0 to Melissa Lord and Carol Zhao, with Sophia Bott and Stacey Fung falling on court three to 46th ranked Krista Hardebeck and Caroline Lampl. On court one, No. 33 Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi led the fourth ranked duo in the country Taylor Davidson and Caroline Doyle 4-3 before the match was suspended.
“The doubles hurt us today, we didn't play like we have been this whole year,” said head coach Robin Stephenson. “After Stanford won the doubles it just set the tone for the singles.”
In singles the Cardinal jumped out to early leads on most courts, winning the first to finish on court one as Fung fell to No. 55 Zhao 6-2, 6-1. Stanford clinched the match victory as courts four and five finished simultaneously with Bott dropping her first Pac-12 match of the season and Kenadi Hance falling on court five.
“Stanford gained a lot of momentum in singles today,” said Stephenson. “Credit to them, they just simply outplayed us at a few spots.”
The remaining singles matches were played out, with Elianne Douglas-Miron falling on court three to No. 78 Doyle 6-2, 6-1 and No. 100 Abbes unable to win in a tough battle with No. 28 Taylor Davidson. To close out the match today Miki Kobayashi grabbed the win on court six in a tie-breaker by a score of 7-6, 1-6, 10-3.
“We will learn from today's match against a very good Stanford team and are dedicated to getting better,” said Stephenson.
The Huskies will be back in action tomorrow at noon when they will face the top team in the country in California at Bill Quillian stadium. As always admission will be free with pizza served to all in attendance after the doubles matches.
