UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. ? The Huskies earned their third win of the year and the first of the spring season, taking the Redhawk Invitational title at Chambers Bay on Tuesday. Fighting through difficult conditions, the Dawgs won by 11 shots, finishing at 49-over 897.
“I've never seen a tournament with such challenging scoring conditions,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “We won by 11, but it felt like we got beat up for three-straight rounds. It was really tough.”
Washington fired a final round of 11-over 291, their best of the tournament and second best of the final round. TCU had the best final round at 5-over, but only climbed to second, 11 back of the Huskies. Oregon State, Washington State and Seattle U. rounded out the top five overall.
“I love that we hung in there,” said Thurmond. “We often talk about never quitting and that sometimes 75 or 76 is the best you can do. This week was certainly like that.”
While 75 or 76 was a good score at Chambers Bay this week, Jonathan Sanders fired the low round of the day, a even-par 70 to win by one over Giulio Castagnara of TCU. Sanders finished the week at 8-over 220 to pick up the third win of his Husky career.
The three wins puts Sanders on an elite list at UW as only Cheng-Tsung Pan, Chris Williams, Brock Mackenzie, Nick Taylor, O.D. Vincent and Corey Pereira have also won at least three times.
“Only a handful of Huskies have ever won three times, so I am happy for Jonathan,” said Thurmond. “Any time the competition is about who is the toughest and the mentally strongest, Sanders will be tough to beat. He's so solid mentally. You just can't break him. Seeing him getting rewarded with a win today was cool stuff.”
Sanders finished his final round with four birdies and four bogeys on a day when big numbers were the norm and birdies were hard to come by. He adds the Redhawk Invitational victory to his two other titles that came in 2014 at the Bandon Dunes Championship and the NCAA Raleigh Regional.
Sanders was not the only Husky near the top of the leaderboard as Frank Garber and Carl Yuan also earned top-10's, tying for fourth. Yuan had a strong finish, shooting a 3-over 73, making two birdies and five bogeys. Meanwhile, Garber battled to a 76 to also finished tied for fourth.
Corey Pereira had another solid week, firing a 4-over 74 on Tuesday to tie for 13th on the week. He made a birdie, three bogeys and a double to finish the week at 17-over 229.
The final player for the Dawgs was Jordan Lu who finished tied for 24th. He also shot 4-over 74 for the final round to have his score used towards the team title. For the week, Lu finished at 4-over 232.
The Dawgs also had three individuals in the field, led by Chris Babcock who had the top finish, tying for 19th. He fired a final round of 4-over 74 to finish at 19-over 231. Other individuals were Kevin Kwon who finished tied for 24th and Tyler Salsbury who was tied for 64th.
Next up for the Huskies in a trip down the coast to Santa Cruz, California, to compete in the Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo Golf Club. The three-day tournament will be from Monday, April 11 through Wednesday, April 13 and include six top-25 teams.
