Apple Cup Of Women's Rowing On Tap This Saturday
April 05, 2016 | Women's Rowing
There's a Northwest flavor this weekend as Washington Rowing takes on crews from Oregon State and Washington State this Saturday, April 9, on the Montlake Cut.
The No. 1-ranked Washington men row in six races against Oregon State, as well as several club crews from Washington State, while the No. 6-ranked UW women will row in five races against WSU.
Here's a look at this Saturday's racing schedule (see link above for lanes and boat designations):

Last weekend, the Husky men swept three races in a dual meet with No. 6 Brown while also winning all four races in the Husky Open. The UW women won four of six races in a regatta at Dexter Lake in Oregon while winning all four of their races in the Husky Open.
WSU presents a formidable foe for the Husky women in the annual Apple Cup matchup. The Cougars finished eighth at the NCAA Championships last year, just four spots behind the fourth-place Huskies.
"The Cougars are a good team," said UW interim women's head coach Conor Bullis, who rowed at Oregon State from 2003-06. "They have been getting better and better every year and I have no doubt that they are ready to come over here, go as fast as they can on our home course and beat us. We are working hard this week to defend our home course and continue to develop and go as fast as we possibly can.
"I am expecting our team to approach this race with all the passion and energy of every Apple Cup that we have ever seen around here," Bullis continued.
On the men's side, Oregon State is a regular at the annual Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) championships. In this, the second week of competitive rowing against crews from other schools, Husky men's head coach Michael Callahan is looking to take a step forward with his young roster.
"I was pleased last week," Callahan explained. "We worked really hard all winter to make sure we had good base speed and good power and length in the middle of the race. I think we executed that last week, so this week is about starting to add pieces to other portions of the race."

ABOUT WASHINGTON ROWING
Rowing at University of Washington was established in 1901 with support from the local business community. In 1903, Washington entered its first intercollegiate race and defeated California, starting their storied “Cal Dual” rivalry. From this beginning, UW crews became the champions in the nation, winning the Gold Medal in the Olympics in 1936 as described in the New York Times bestseller The Boys in the Boat. UW has continued its tradition of winning championships and Olympic medals, and today is one of the best university rowing programs in the world. With its state-of-the-art training facility located on the UW campus right on the shores of Lake Washington, surrounded by mountains and in close proximity to the iconic Montlake Cut, Washington Rowing attracts the best men and women student-athletes from the Pacific Northwest and around the world.
