SEATTLE – The No. 11-ranked University of Washington softball team used dominant pitching and timely hitting to earn a 5-1 win against No. 18 Arizona on Monday night (April 4) at Husky Softball Stadium. The Huskies win the series, 2-1, and improve to 4-5 in Pac-12 play and 23-8 overall.
Freshman starter Taran Alvelo recorded four strikeouts while allowing just two hits and one unearned run through the first 3.1 innings. Junior LHP Casey Stangel was similarly dominant, earning the win after coming into the game in the fourth inning with one out. Stangel allowed just two hits and no walks with a strikeout through 3.2 innings.
The Huskies manufactured runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings, while getting runners on board in each inning. Freshman Morganne Flores, junior Ali Aguilar and sophomore Julia DePonte headlined the Husky bats with two hits apiece; Flores drove in two runs to lead the team. Aguilar hit her 17th home run of the season – which is tied for first in the nation – in the sixth inning.
After a quick three up, three down first inning, which included back-to-back strikeouts by Alvelo, the Wildcats took the game's first lead off Husky miscues in the second. After drawing a leadoff walk, the runner advanced off a passed ball and a wild pitch before scoring off an error.
Washington scored three runs off three hits and three walks to take the lead in the third. DePonte and Aguilar registered back-to-back one-out singles before senior Kimberlee Souza walked to load the bases. Another walk issued to Stangel scored the game's first run and then Flores unloaded on a two-RBI single off the wall in right-center field to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
Arizona threatened in the fourth, drawing a leadoff walk before being hit-by-pitch. After a pop up to first base, Stangel entered the game and retired the next two batters via a ground out and a fly out.
The Huskies tacked on another run in both the fourth and sixth innings. DePonte's second triple of the season scored sophomore Trysten Melhart who drew a walk to start the fourth and Aguilar led off the sixth with her 17th home run of the season, a deep shot into the right field bleachers to make it a 5-1 game.
Washington retired the Wildcats in order in the seventh. After a strikeout and a pop up, DePonte made an outstanding catch in center field for the final out to give Washington the series win, two games to one.
