PALO ALTO, Calif. – Just a handful of Huskies were in action this afternoon to finish off the Stanford Invitational, but Washington still made an impression, as the Huskies had three big heat victories today with PRs from Hannah Derby, Blake Nelson, and Kennadi Bouyer. In the field, sophomore Onyie Chibuogwu had another hammer PR, improving on her No. 3 mark in school history.
The first win of the day on the track came from redshirt freshman Derby, who took control late of her 800-meters heat, confidently closing to the finish to win in a time of 2:08.85. That's a new career-best for the Gig Harbor, Wash. native who was the alternate on the Huskies' DMR indoors.
The next win came in the men's 800-meters, in the second heat, as All-American Blake Nelson went wide late to pull away and win in a new personal-best of 1:50.00. In the same heat, senior All-American Derrick Daigre finished third in a season-best time of 1:50.85.
A third heat win came in the sprints, as junior All-American Kennadi Bouyer won the third heat of the 200-meters in a new PR of 24.23 seconds despite a slight headwind. Bouyer had not run an outdoor 200-meters at UW, so the new mark puts her at No. 9 on the Husky top-10 lists.
Chibuogwu went over the 180-foot mark for the first time on each of her final two throws today in the hammer. Her fifth attempt was just slightly better, going 181-5. Senior Carolyn Gravelle also upper her personal-best to 161-0 on her third and final throw, finishing 11th.
Next Saturday, the Huskies visit Eugene for the annual Pepsi Team Invitational at Hayward Field.
