April 23, 2016 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Despite giving up just four hits in the game, the No. 10-ranked University of Washington softball team fell to Oregon State, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon (April 23) at OSU Softball Complex. Among the four hits were a pair of solo home run balls which helped the Beavers claim game two of the three-game set.
Junior Casey Stangel (6-3) took the loss, allowing three hits and three runs in three innings worked. Sophomore Madi Schreyer entered the game in the fourth and tossed the final three frames, giving up just one hit and one walk.
The Husky bats scattered just six hits through seven innings. Freshman Tannon Snow went 2-for-3, hitting her fourth home run of the season to tie the game in the second inning. Sophomore Trysten Melhart also went 2-for-3 with a double while sophomore Taylor Van Zee recorded an RBI double in the fifth.
After the Huskies left the bases loaded in the first, Oregon State scored off a wild pitch to stake out to a 1-0 lead in the home half of the inning. The Beavers singled to open the game and then advanced to third off a bunt and a fielder's choice.
Both teams exchanged solo home runs in the second inning. Snow drove her fourth homer of the season over the scoreboard in left field to leadoff the frame before OSU came back with a solo shot of their own to manufacture the go-ahead run and reclaim the lead, 2-1.
After Oregon State hit another solo homer to leadoff the bottom of the fourth and take a 3-1 lead, Schreyer replaced Stangel in the circle. The Beavers continued to threat, using a two-out rally to put a pair on, but a ground out ended the inning to keep the baserunners at bay.
The Huskies scored a run of their own in the top of the fifth to keep it a one-run game. Senior Kimberlee Souza ripped a one-out single up the middle and in the next-at bat, pinch runner Amirah Milloy scored off Van Zee's double off the wall in center.
The Huskies managed to get a runner on board in the sixth as Snow reached on a two-out single, but a ground out ended the inning before Oregon State retired Washington in order in the seventh to win game two, 3-2.
