Aguilar's Two Home Runs Leads Washington Past Oregon State
April 24, 2016 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- After struggling to find its offensive rhythm in the first two games of the series, the No. 10-ranked University of Washington softball team's bats came alive to win the series finale against Oregon State, 7-2. Junior Ali Aguilar hit a pair of home runs, upping her season total to 20, which leads the Pac-12. The shortstop has now had three multi-home run games this season.
The Huskies recorded 13 hits in the contest, which is more than the previous two games combined. Aguilar led the team with four runs batted in while Tannon Snow went 3-for-3 with an RBI. The freshman went 6-for-8 over the weekend with three RBI. Freshman Morganne Flores and senior Jennie McNeill also recorded an RBI in the game.
Solid pitching in the circle supplemented the potent Husky offense as freshman Taran Alvelo (16-5) earned the complete-game win, allowing just six hits and two runs while striking out six.
Washington used a trio of hits in the second to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Flores and sophomore Trysten Melhart strung together back-to-back singles before Snow followed with a single up the middle to score Flores. In the next at-bat, McNeill's RBI ground out plated Melhart for the Huskies' second run of the inning.
The Dawgs used two-out rallies to tack on three more runs in the third and fourth innings. Back-to-back two-out singles by senior Kimberlee Souza and junior Casey Stangel ignited the rally in the third before Flores doubled down the line in the next at-bat to score Souza. In the fourth, Snow had a great at-bat to draw a leadoff walk and two outs later, Aguilar drove her first homer to the deepest part of the park to put the Huskies up, 5-0.
Oregon State used a two-out rally of their own to get on the scoreboard in the fifth. After a double down the left field line, the Beavers hit a two-run homer to right field to trim its deficit to three runs, 5-2.
After Snow singled to open the sixth, Aguilar slugged another home run to the opposite field to put the Huskies up for good, 7-2.
Oregon State threatened in the home half of the inning, loading the bases, but a liner to McNeill at third base gave Washington its second out before Alvelo recorded her sixth strikeout of the game to end the inning unscathed.
Washington returns home to host Utah this weekend (April 29-May 1) at Husky Softball Stadium.
