Huskies Outlast Oregon State In Extras To Win Series Opener
April 22, 2016 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Down to its final out in the seventh inning, junior Ali Aguilar broke out of a six-game hitting slump with a game-tying solo home run to force extra innings before the No. 10-ranked University of Washington softball team pulled away in the 10th to win the series opener against Oregon State, 3-2.
Freshman RHP Taran Alvelo was relentless in the circle against the Beavers, allowing just one earned run in the longest appearance of her career. She scattered nine hits and just one walk while striking out a career-high 11 batters in 10 innings pitched. Alvelo threw 155 total piches and 106 were for strikes.
Playing in just its second extra inning game of the season, the Husky bats were held to just five hits in the contest. Freshman Tannon Snow drove in the deciding run for the Purple and Gold with a single in the 10th inning and fellow freshman Morganne Flores hit her fifth home run to give the Huskies an early lead in the second.
Washington took the game's first lead off Flores' solo homer to open the second inning, but Oregon State took advantage of an error and back-to-back singles to tie the game, 1-1 in the third.
With the game still locked in the sixth inning, Oregon State took its first lead of the contest, reaching on a one-out infield single before scoring off a double.
After a strikeout and a ground out for two quick outs in the seventh, Washington was down to its final out with the Pac-12 leader in home runs stepping to the plate. Aguilar drove the 1-1 count to right-center field for her 18th home run of the season to lock the game back up, 2-2.
In extra frames, Alvelo and the Huskies worked their way out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth. The Beavers hit back-to-back singles before advancing off a bunt. With runners on second and third, Alvelo recorded back-to-back strikeouts to put an end to the threat.
Aguilar ignited the rally in the 10th, drawing her team-leading 29th walk of the season to open the frame. Senior Kimberlee Souza then laid down a bunt to advance her into scoring position and after a fly out, Snow delivered a two-out RBI single through the infield to plate Aguilar from second.
Washington and Oregon State will play game two of the series tomorrow (April 23) at 1 p.m.
