SEATTLE – The Dawgs continued their stay in SoCal with several big season- and career-best marks today in the sprints and throws. Washington had its first competitors of the week take to the historic Hilmer Lodge Stadium track at the Mt. SAC Relays, with the throwers getting loose at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach.
Alexis Ford had one of the performances of the day, as she took more than half a second off her 400-meters PR, breaking the 55-second mark for the first time with a time of 54.96 which puts her 10th on the Husky top-10 list. Sophomore Carolyn Birkenfeld clocked a time of 56.14 seconds as well. On the men's side, junior Andrew Brown took a nice step in his season with a season-best 47.70 run in the 400m.
Junior Kennadi Bouyer ran the fastest 100-meters of her career, though a 3.7-meter tailwind took it out of record-setting range. Still, Bouyer dashed to the finish in 11.43 seconds, which would tie her for 11th in the West Region coming into the weekend, and should be a Prelims qualifier. Also picking up a big PR today was sophomore Eric Simpson in the 110m hurdles as he crossed the line in 14.55 seconds. Jacopo Spanò ran in the 200-meters, going 21.51, slightly off his season-best.
Several men's vaulters had strong days. Senior Chris Williams had an outdoor season-best of 17-0 ¾, while Chase Smith and Blaise Black both made 16-6 ¾. Kaitlin Zinsli was the only Husky women's vaulter to go today, as she made 12-3 ½. In the women's triple jump, Alanna Coker had a best of 38-8 ¼ for 12th.
The last Husky in action at Mt. SAC worked late tonight, as redshirt freshman Mahmoud Moussa completed a 5,000-meters run with a time of 14:31.05.
Over at Long Beach, several throwers kicked things off at the Beach Invitational. A welcome return from senior Quinn Hale highlighted the day, as the 2014 All-American competed for the first time since taking fifth at the 2014 NCAA Championships, and on his second throw he flew the javelin 215-feet, 5-inches, which should be a West Prelims qualifier.
Sophomore Onyie Chibuogwu extended her PR yet again in the hammer throw, going 184-3 on her third attempt, improving her No. 3 mark in school history and closing the gap on the No. 2 mark of 189-9. Senior Carolyn Gravelle added a couple feet to her PR, going 163-1 today, and Alyx Toeaina was just a few inches off her PR at 161-5. In the men's hammer throw, Carey Campbell went 175-7 and Kyle White threw 170-11.
Another day at Mt. SAC and a busy schedule at the Beach Invitational will wrap up the week's work on Saturday.
