SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – No. 25 Washington finished strong at the 70th Annual Western Intercollegiate, climbing to sixth place after a round of 4-over 354. Playing at the Pasatiempo Golf Club, the Dawgs fired one of the best rounds of the day to climb two spots in the overall standings.
“We finished strong today,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “The greens and pins are just crazy out here and at any moment you can make a huge score.”
The Huskies finished the week at 18-over 1068, jumping over No. 7 Arizona State and No. 21 San Diego State in the final round. No. 9 Stanford took the tournament title at 9-under, while No. 1 USC was second at 1-over and No. 26 Oregon was third at 9-over.
“We developed as a team this week and played decent,” said Thurmond. “Five of our six guys finished in the top-33 the field and I know sixth as a team doesn't sound awesome, but it's a tough course and a tough field. After a slow start this week, I thought we did really well.”
The Dawgs were led by Corey Pereira who had the top round of the day for UW, firing a 2-under 68. He made four birdies to just two bogeys for his second 68 in three days. Pereira finished solo third overall at 3-under, earning his fourth top-10 of the year.
Pereira was well back of the top two players, Maverick McNealy of Stanford (16-under) and Aaron Wise of Oregon (14-under) who each were under the previous tournament record for scoring. They battled down to the final holes for the individual title and honor of wearing the blue jacket.
Also playing well was freshman Carl Yuan who shot a 1-under 69, at one point making four birdies in five holes. He finished 2-over for the week and tied for 16th overall.
Chris Babcock had his best round of the week with an even-par 70 that included three birdies and three bogeys. He climbed to a tie for 28th overall at 6-over for his three rounds.
In that same tie for 28th was Frank Garber who shot a 4-over 74 for his final round. Garber made three birdies and three bogeys on the day, but costly double bogeys on the 16th and 18th holes derailed an otherwise strong performance.
Jonathan Sanders was the final Husky in the top-33, tying for 33rd with a three-day total of 7-over 217. He finished with a round of 3-over 73, making three birdies and six bogeys on the day.
Kevin Kwon rounded out the squad in the unusual format of the Western Intercollegiate that plays six and keeps five scores each day. He shot a 4-over 74 on Wednesday and finished tied for 80th overall at 22-over.
The sixth-place finish at the Western Intercollegiate wraps up the regular season for the Dawgs. They will now prepare for the Pac-12 Championships, beginning on April 27 in Salt Lake City. The Huskies will face several of the same opponents as they look for a sixth conference title in school history.
