SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The Huskies remain in eighth place after the second round of the Western Intercollegiate played at the Pasatiempo Golf Club. Washington finished with a round of 8-over 358 and is now at 14-over 714 for the tournament.
The Dawgs had climbed higher on the leaderboard midway through the second round, but stumbled down the stretch to fall back to eighth.
"I feel pretty good about the day," said head coach Matt Thurmond. "The finish looks rough and it was, but those last holes we played were so hard."
Washington closed thier round on the first couple holes of the back nine and struggled particularly on the 10th and 11th holes, playing them 9-over as a team.
No. 9 Stanford had the only under-par round of the day to climb to the lead at 8-under, followed by No. 26 Oregon at 5-under and No. 1 USC at 1-under. No. 39 Pepperdine is currently fourth at 5-over, followed by No. 7 Arizona State at 8-over.
"The whole course was really tough today," said Thurmond. "It was like a carnival on the greens. I thought our guys played solidly and competed really hard."
Individually, it has turned mostly to a two-player race with Aaron Wise of Oregon leading at 11-under, followed by Maverick McNealy of Stanford at 10-under. The Dawgs top player is Corey Pereira who is tied for eighth at 1-under after being one of three Huskies to shoot a 1-over 71 on the day.
Pereira made five birdies on the day, but also four bogeys and a double and is the only Dawg in the top-10. Also shooting a 71 were Frank Garber and Carl Yuan. Garber had the steadiest round for the Huskies, making two birdies and just three bogeys and is now 2-over for the week and tied for 24th. Meanwhile, Yuan had a great round going until a costly triple bogey on the 11th hole. He finished with four birdies and two bogeys to go with the triple and is now tied for 30th at 3-over.
Chris Babcock also played well, shooting a 2-over 72 and is now tied for 47th. He had his round at 2-under with no bogeys, before bogeying four of the last five holes on his day.
The final score kept in the play six, score five system of the Western Intercollegiate came from Jonathan Sanders who fired a 3-over 73. Sanders had three birdies and four bogeys on the day, but also a double-bogey on the par-five 13th. He is now at 4-over for the week and tied for 40th.
Kevin Kwon rounded out the squad with a second-straight round of 9-over 79 and is now tied for 84th at 18-over for the week.
The Huskies will finish up the Western Intercollegiate on Wednesday with the third round. It will be the final 18 holes before the postseason begins with the Pac-12 Championships on April 29, this year hosted by Utah.
