TEMPE, Ariz. - The javelin crew always has the longest wait of all track and field athletes as the indoor season comes and goes. The wait was especially long this year for senior Carson Fuller, who had his junior season cut short by an injury after only two meets. Fuller, the Spokane native, announced his return with a 241-foot javelin toss today to get the win at the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Invitational.
Hosted by Arizona State, the majority of the two-day meet takes place Saturday evening, but Fuller made sure the Huskies wouldn't wait that long to get their first winner. After building confidence with a strong opener of 221-8, Fuller jumped into the lead on his fourth round throw, going 235-3, smashing his old PR by eight feet. Something obviously felt right about that one, as he came back on his next attempt and went 241-0. Fuller jumps all the way up to No. 4 in school history with the mark and goes to No. 8 in the NCAA in a season with a lot of big early javelin marks.
Also getting his senior season going was 2015 All-American Curtis Clauson. Clauson didn't connect the same way Fuller did, but he did have his best throw on his sixth and last attempt, going 201-7 to finish fifth.
The Huskies had another new top-10 mark in the first event of the season today, as sophomore Onyie Chibuogwu had a big PR in her first hammer throw competition of the spring. Chibuogwu, on her first throw, went 179-4, PR'ing by more than five feet, and going to third on the women's hammer top-10 list. She would finish fifth overall. Senior Carolyn Gravelle also threw 158-0 and senior Alyx Toeaina opened with a 152-9 to finish 14th and 15th, respectively.
In the men's hammer, senior Kyle White took 14th with a best toss of 173-feet, 9-inches, and sophomore Carey Campbell went 169-3 to match his personal-best to the inch.
The meet picks up tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. with the discus competition, then the first track event goes at 6:20 p.m.
