March 22, 2016 | Softball
SEATTLE -- The No. 8-ranked University of Washington softball team dropped the series finale against No. 7-ranked Oregon, 16-4 (6) Monday night at Husky Softball Stadium. With the loss, the Huskies move to 19-6 overall and 0-3 in Pac-12 play.
Junior Casey Stangel led the Huskies at the plate for the second straight game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. She knocked out her third home run of the season and second of the series in the second inning.
After scoring off a sacrifice fly in the first, the Ducks used three hits, including a three-run home run to score six runs in the second. Madi Schreyer replaced starting pitcher freshman Taran Alvelo in the circle after the two-out home run and the sophomore did not give up a single hit until the sixth inning when the Ducks erupted for nine runs on seven hits and an error.
Washington faced an early seven-run deficit before scoring its first runs of the game in the second inning. Stangel hit her second home run in as many days to lead off and an error and a single by freshman Morganne Flores put runners on the corners. Snow then unloaded on an RBI double to score DePonte and in the next at-bat, senior Dani Braun's sac-fly scored Flores.
The Huskies tacked on another run in the bottom of the third to make it a three-run game, 7-4. Junior Ali Aguilar drew a walk to lead off and after Stangel reached on an infield single, Oregon made a pitching change as Cheridan Hawkins replaced starter Megan Kleist. After a strikeout, Flores was hit-by-pitch to load the bases and then Aguilar scored off a wild pitch.
Despite getting runners aboard, Washington was unable to bring anymore runs across in the final three innings as Oregon held on for the decisive victory.
Next up, Washington will head to Los Angeles for a three-game series against UCLA. First game is scheduled for Thursday (March 25) at 5 p.m. PST.
