Dawgs Pick Up Second Win Of The Weekend
March 20, 2016 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 65 Washington women's tennis team defeated No. 51 Utah today 4-0 at Bill Quillian Stadium for their second win on the weekend.
“I'm really proud of the resiliency this group showed this whole weekend,” said head coach Robin Stephenson. “We were tough out there today and although we didn't play our best tennis, we battled and found ways to put ourselves in good positions on every court.”
For the fourteenth time this season, the Huskies began the match by claiming the doubles point. On court one, 37th ranked duo Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi dominated their opponents in a 6-0 win. The victory moved Kobayashi to 22-6 in doubles on the season and put her in a tie for fourth with former All-American Denise Dy for best doubles win percentage in a season at Washington. To clinch the doubles point Tami Grende and Kenadi Hance finished with a 6-1 win to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
Abbes got the ball rolling for the Huskies on court one, with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Margo Pletcher, with No. 105 Stacey Fung right behind on court two, winning 6-1, 6-2. With four matches remaining and three of those in third sets, Grende was the first to finish, defeating Jena Cheng 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to give the Huskies their fourth point for the match. With Washington clinching the victory up 4-0, the remaining singles matches did not finish.
“We have played a very strong schedule and all of the experiences we have had are paying off and will continue to,” said Stephenson. “We know our best tennis is in front of us and we are ready for the opportunities to come. It'll be nice for the girls to have spring break this week and our bye weekend to get some rest and get back to work on a few things before the second half of our conference schedule.”
The Huskies will take a break next weekend, before heading back out on the road to face Arizona State April 1st and Arizona on the 2nd. To keep up to date with the team, check out our website at GoHuskies.com, and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
