Huskies Defend Home Court Against Colorado
March 19, 2016 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 65 Washington women's tennis team played their first game outdoors at Bill Quillian Stadium today, defeating Colorado 5-2.
“It was great to get a win today at home and get back on the right track,” said head coach Robin Stephenson. “We have had some very tough losses the past couple of weeks so getting those behind us and getting the win out there was very important.”
The Huskies began by taking the doubles point against the Buffaloes, starting with a dominating 6-1 victory for the 37th ranked duo of Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi on court one. With the win today, Kobayashi moved to 21-6 on the season in doubles play, currently placing her 6th for the best doubles winning percentage in a season in Washington history. With the Dawgs leading on both remaining courts, Tami Grende and Kenadi Hance were first to finish on court three, grabbing a 6-2 win to clinch the doubles point.
“I thought we did a great job grabbing the lead in doubles, which has been a very consistent point for us all season long,” said Stephenson.
Washington was then able to carry the momentum from the doubles wins over to singles, with Hance leading the way on court five with a 6-2, 6-1 win for her 11th singles win of the season. Following close behind were Abbes and Elianne Douglas-Miron, as they finished almost simultaneously to give the Huskies the clinching 4-0 lead over Colorado.
“We got out to quick leads in singles and kept the momentum,” said Stephenson. “I was happy to see our girls close out their sets and matches today as finishing has been a big focus for us.”
On court six Sophia Bott was next to finish, defeating Brigitte Beck 6-1, 6-2 to give her a perfect 4-0 record in Pac-12 play this year. To close out the match Colorado was able to grab two wins, with Tami Grende falling in a tie-breaker on court four, and No. 105 Stacey Fung falling 6-4, 6-4 in a tough battle with Jeannez Daniel.
Today's win was the Huskies' 10th of the season and moved their home record to 6-0. They will look to defend their home court again tomorrow when they play No. 51 Utah at noon at Bill Quillian Stadium.
“Utah will be another great test tomorrow,” said Stephenson. “We are looking forward to laying it all on the line again.”
